According to a new study, older adults must exercise more than younger adults in order to keep their muscle size. A group of researchers analyzed some data in order to determine how much exercise was needed in order for people to increase or at least maintain their muscle mass. They looked at two groups of people: a group formed by adults with ages ranging from 20 to 35 and another group with older adults with ages ranging from 60 to 75.
The research lasted for a period of 48 weeks, divided in two parts. The first part of the study lasted for about 16 weeks and during this time, all the participants had to do three sets of resistance training exercises, such as squats, knee extensions and leg press, for about three times a week. Then came the second phase of the study, which lasted for 32 weeks and here, the participants of the study were divided into three groups. A group was asked to continue doing all the sets of exercises, but only once a week, another group was asked to do one set of exercises once a week and the third group was asked to give up the whole training altogether.
The difference between the younger adults and the older adults was quite clear: while younger adults got to keep their muscle size in both groups that had to reduce their training exercises, the older adults got their muscle size shrunk, even if they continued to do three sets of exercises a day per week. Still, even though the muscle size shrunk in older adults, both the younger adults and the older adults kept their strength for a longer period of time, even if they had only one day they could use for exercising in a week.
According to the lead researcher of the study, Marcas Bamman, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, it seems that the group of researchers does not advocate for people to train only one day a week for the rest of their life. Even though such a program could be effective on the long run, there may be weeks when it would be virtually impossible for people to do their exercises. The study only shows that older adults need far more exercise to keep in shape and to keep their muscular size in comparison to younger adults. Still, it is a widely known fact that younger adults are more active than older adults and that may also be one of the reasons for which older adults must exercise more to stay in shape. Moreover, older adults should include such exercises in their weekly regimen and if at times they cannot exercise more than one day per week, that is far better than no exercise at all.
