Top seed Robin Soderling destroyed Argentine Diego Junqueira 6-0, 6-1 in the opening term to reach the quarter finals of the 398,250 euro-Swedish event. Next up for the host is Potito Starace of Italy.
Soderling broke his opponent six times out of seven tries, hitting at the same time three aces and providing a 71 first serve percentage. The crowd favorite managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire first term as Junqueira could only win several points on his own service. As for the Argentinean, he finished the game with a poor 22 percentage of service points. Robin needed just 47 minutes to get rid of the unseeded, being expected to face Starace who also reached the quarter finals after overcoming Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy of France 6-0, 6-7, 6-2.
The Italian managed to create 16 break-point opportunities against Veigy, five of which being converted by one of the main favorites who survived though a second-set scare. The French unseeded won just a couple of break points, but pushed the game into decider. Finally, the last set found the same Starace grabbing another precious break in the midway, which helped him to take a comfortable three-game early lead and also to stay in touch with the clear victory.
On the same first half of the draw, world number eight Toms Berdych crashed Teymuraz Gabasjvili of Russia 6-2, 6-2 to set a Blaz Kavcic meeting in the final eight. The Czech, who has gone 33-14 this term, needed four breaks to oust his opponent who could only save two of six break points from the favorite and create just a single break point chance which he failed to convert.
Said Berdych, who still lacks a title this season: “It was tough conditions out there, quite wet and heavy balls. I played a solid game though. I’m feeling strong and looking forward to more matches. It was good to spend some energy on the court. It’s a tough transition to be back on clay after grass, probably the toughest transition of the year.” Next up for Berdych is Blaz Kavcic who has secured a free quarter final berth after Juan Monaco retired from the tournament due to an injury.
Concerning the second half of the table, David Ferrer is to make his debut against compatriot Pere Riba who blanked Christian Lindell 6-4, 6-2 in the first round. Filippo Volandri and Andreas Haider Maurer will also fight for a quarter final berth. The Italian took advantage of Tommy Robredo’s abandon at 7=5, 5-5 up, while the Austrian beat Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan 7-5, 6-2.
Nicolas Almagro and Guillermo Olaso, who have been faored by a BYE in the opening term, are to make their debut against each other with the Costa do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice winner starting as favorite. Finally, Michael Ryderstedt and Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo have both progressed through following three-set wins. The Spaniard stunned Andrey Golubev 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, while Ryderstedt overcame Maximo Gonzalez 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in the first day.
