Pakistani businessman Raja Jahangir Akhtar, 68, made good on his promise to start a fasting unto death protesting the corruption in the Pakistani society. He started on Monday at a marketplace in Islamabad.
Raja Jahangir Akhtar is inspired in his protest of the Indian activist Anna Hazare, who fasted in favor of the Lokpall Bill, an Indian legislative draft that is expected to give corruption at highest level in India a blow by placing all dignitaries, including the Prime Minister, under the ambit of the ombudsman, who would thus be given the right to prosecute in justice whoever is accused of such acts.
Hazare broke fast when the leaders of India decided to bring the Lokpal Bill into debate as soon as the new session of the parliament resumes. It is expected that the provision regarding the office of the prime minister be admitted in the end. After all, Hazare promised to resume his protest unless the Lokpal Bill passes as it was drafted, with the inclusion of the PM’s office under the ambit of the Lokpal.
Raja Jahangir Akhtar has drafted his own version of anti-graft bill, inspired by the Indian one, at least in its desire to bring all public offices under control.
He said that this would repeal the existing National Accountability Ordinance of 1999. The bill is expected to create protection for the people who want to expose corruption and corrupted people.
Akhtar said that he had two demands: a law against corruption, and the improvement of the ties with the neighboring countries. He says that in stead of wasting money on weapons, Pakistan should invest in the public services.
He was very clear in asserting that if the people don’t support his cause he is ready to give his life for this protest.
Akhtar made it clear that graft, rent control, inflation and dimilitarization are the plagues of Pakistan he is ready to fight for.
His attitude towards India is special for a Pakistani public figure. Apart from drawing on Hazare’s protest, Akhtar is convince that the enmity between India and Pakistan be over as soon as possible, so that the people of both countries can cooperate as they used to.
The borders should not be erased, Raja Jahangir Akhtar said, so that the people of Pakistan may not have the impression that their country has been absorbed into India.
