AC Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic sidelined for tonight’s UEFA Champions League clash against his former side FC Barcelona, the Italian club announced.
The 29 year old Swede hurt during a training session with the Rossoneri and is unlikely to confront the Catalans on Tuesday at the Camp Nou. Ibra will not make the trip to Barcelona, according to the club, the muscle injury leaving him out of the Massimiliano Allegri’s plans. “AC Milan announce that during today’s training Zlatan Ibrahimovic felt pain in the adductor (groin) region,” the official statement read.
“A clinical evaluation revealed a muscle injury that will prevent him joining the trip to Barcelona.” Zlatan has scored Milan’s first goal in the first day of Serie A last weekend when the Italian champions were drawn 2-2 by Lazio. Milan will make their UCL debut against the European champions in front of whom they will start as second favorites.
Last year AC Milan were drawn Real Madrid in the same group, leaving the competition earlier than expected. Tottenham Hotspur ousted the Italians in the last 16 term. Ibra joined AC Milan after splitting with Barca last year. The Swede spent two seasons with Pep Guardiola’s side for which he had scored 16 goals in 29 games.
The forwarder was loaned to Milan in 2010 and was given a full time job at the end of the season. He has scored 16 goals with the Rossoneri with whom he won the Serie A title as well as the Italian Super Cup last month.
Alexandre Pato and Antonio Cassano are the main replacements for the Swede. The Brazilian wasn’t sued as starter in the first day of Serie A as Allegri decided to use Cassano and Ibra in front. Cassano scored the last goal against Lazio, bringing the champions a point.
Rossoneri vice president Adriano Galliani confirmed that the coach might use both Cassano and Zlatan on Tuesday night. “We’re calm and tranquil, Alexandre Pato and Antonio Cassano, two champions, will now play instead. I’m not crying about this situation.”
Group H also includes BATE Borisov and Victoria Plzen. Milan will play their first home game on September 18 when they host the Czech champions Plzen.
