Novak Djokovic has won the US Open trophy after defeating defending champion Rafa Nadal in a four set epic 6-2, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, in four hours and ten minutes. The 24 year old Serb has also improved his season record to 64-2, the American title being his third Grand Slam one of the year.
The two exchanged four breaks only in the first set which the top seed won in 53 minutes. Nole was then forced to fight harder for his leads as Nadal was improving his play by each term. Three more breaks allowed the ten-title Djokovic to make it 2-0 in the second set which also saw the Spaniard steal two of his opponent’s services.
Nadal grabbed the third set in 84 minutes, being force to cut the deficit after an impressive tie break he managed to win at three. As for the fourth term, it showed Nole simply playing his best tennis. He broke the former world champion twice in six tries without allowing Nadal to break any of his services.
This was Nole’s tenth title of the season and 64th win, the American Grand Slam trophy being his first of career and fourth Grand overall. Djokovic, who has captured 28 singles in career, is also two time winner of the Australian Open and this term’s Wimbledon trophy. He still lacks the French Open one, his best performances in Paris including three semi finals.
On the other side, Nadal failed to claim his second US Open trophy but he still remains a main favorite at Flushing Meadows. The Spaniard grabbed the French Open title this season, though, after another tough final against Roger Federer.
Said Djokovic after the final: “It’s something that makes me incredibly happy. It’s definitely going to take a lot of effort to try to repeat even half of what I have done this year for next year. I guess it takes some time to realise the success that I had this year, especially now winning another major. I’m all over positive emotions.”
The Serb finished the game with a 66 first serve percentage, 51 unforced errors, seven aces, 55 winners and a 51 return percentage, compared to Nadal whose showing included a 68 first serve percentage, 37 unforced errors, 32 winners and a 42 return percentage. Also, Novak converted 11 out of 26 break points, while the Spaniard could only convert six out of 14.
En route to the final, Djokovic had ousted Roger Federer in yet another five set epic in the semi finals, Janko Tipsarevic 7-6, 6-7, 6-0, 3-0 in the quarters, Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth round, Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the third one, Carlos Berlocq 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 in the second one and Conor Niland 6-0, 5-1 in the opener.
As for Nadal, he had previously eliminated fourth favorite Andy Murray 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the last four term, Andy Roddick 6-2, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarter finals, Gilles Muller 7-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the fourth one, David Nalbandian 7-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the third term, Nicolas Mahut 6-2, 6-2 in the previous one and Andrey Golubev 6-3, 7-6, 7-5 in the opener.
Nole has also closed the gap against Nadal, the head to head series between the two going 16-13 to the Spaniard whose last win dates from last year’s World Tour Finals in London. The two have met six times so far this year as Djokovic has won them all.
Both Nole and Rafa have qualified for the World Tour Finals. The Serb leads the world standings with 12,250 points, being followed by the world number two with 7,645. Andy Murray and Roger Federer have also secured a WTF spot, while David Ferrer, Mardy Fish, Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych still have to fight for their places in London.
Djokovic is to receive a 1,800,000 dollar check as well as 2000 points ATP which both consolidates his leading position and gives him lot of chances to finish the year as leader for the first time. Nadal will pocket $900,000 and 1200 points ATP.
