Chelsea striker Fernando Torres might have lost his good image on Stamford Bridge after the Spanish player brought a lot of criticism on Blues ‘slow players’ in an interview with Primera Division.
The 50 million pound forwarder, who has only scored one goal for the Blues, may not be in the best position to criticize his team mates but that did not stop him to express his own ideas regarding the situation on Stamford Bridge. His claims might also attract a fine, according to the Chelsea new manager Andre Villas Boas who confirmed the club is probing Torres interview.
“When I changed club I knew it was going to be a slow process, although I didn’t expect it to be so long. Chelsea is, of the English teams, maybe the least English. They have a slow way of playing; to always have the ball makes the rival fall back easily so they leave no holes,” said the player who also thiks that some players are too ‘old’ to bring something new.
Torres praised instead Jua Mata’s arrival from Valencia of whom the former Liverpool striker said that has the power to fasten the pace in Chelsea attack. Mata made an impressive debut, scoring a precious goal against newly promoted Norwich last month. Torres has gathered 18 selections with the Blues but is till chasing his second goal with Boas side.
Chelsea failed to strengthen their side with midfielder Luka Modric from Tottenham Hotspur after the local rivals refused to sell him across the road, something which might see Chelsea in big difficulty. The Blues has won three Premier League games under their new Portuguese manager but have shown they are still in desperate need of a new attack player.
With Didier Drogba out for yet another week, the Blues may have some hard times against Bayer Leverkusen which the Blues face on Tuesday night at the Stamford Bridge in the first game of the UEFA Champions League group stage phase.
It also remains to be seen who much impact Torres interview had on Andre Villas Boas who looked decided to fine his player if the club finds him guilty of improper conduct against their own interests. Chelsea beat Sunderland 2-1 away on Saturday and were very close to leaving Sunderland with one point.
They sit third in the standings with ten points, two behind leaders and champions Manchester Untied and Manchester City who have both won 12 points in four games. Chelsea will next meet United on Old Trafford in what is expected to be a tough reiteration of last term’s UCL quarter finals. The two sides meet next Sunday in what will also be the first big test for Boas as Chelsea manager.
