A new prohibition on drinks comes into effect in Russia as president Dmitri Medvedev signs a law that restricts the sale of alcoholic beverages in an attempt to reduce their illegal production.
In a e-mail statement released on Wednesday, Kremlin announces that the president signed into law the bill by which the beer is submitted to a strict control both in regard to its production and its sales.
Thus, by this law beer is considered an alcoholic beverage and from 2013 it will no longer be available at kiosks.
By this law the advertising for alcoholic drinks is banned, the stores will no longer be allowed to sell alcohol from 11 pm to 8 am and licenses for alcohol transport will be required.
According to some experts in alcohol market in Russia, the new law will bring a little order on this market but will not diminish the consumption of beer.
Statistics show that last year Russians consumed 12.5 liters of alcohol per person, 4 of which was beer, and 5, vodka. 30% of the beer consumed in Russia is sold at kiosks.
Before 2008, 40% of the liquor production was illegally produced, and the percent dropped to 20% over the last years after federal regulations were introduced. By this provision, the illegal production is expected to decrease even further, down to 5 or even 2 percent.
