Detroit Tigers have gone top alongside Indians after beating Oakland Athletics 8-3 last night at the Comerica Park where the fifth term saw the two sides score nine of the eleven points. Oakland managed to take a two-point lead at one point, only to be left five adrift in the fifth and sixth innings.
The first three rounds went scoreless on Comerica, while the fourth one brought Detroit the first lead through Martinez who scored the first point also thanks to an error committed by baseman Jackson. Even more than that, Detroit went back into the lead thanks to Cabrera, who fired a 41-foot homerun, and Boesch who made it 4-3. Form then on Oakland could only witness their own ruining as Tigers were preparing for a four-point rally. Peralta singled to center, allowing Martinez to extend the advantage to two points, Guillen fired a 413 footer and Peralta ended the fifth-term session with a seventh point.
Finally, Jackson scored the last point in the sixth round after Boesch doubled to right. Detroit thus grabbed a hard fought victory which sends them top in the Central table, the victory over Athletics being their 29th at home. Detroit have gone .531 so far this season, including 51 wins and 45 defeats, yesterday’s win being also their second in a row and sixth in the past ten games.
On the other side, Oakland lie foot of the table in the West with a .433 record which features 42 wins and 55 losses, the defeat to Tigers being their fourth in the past ten games and 33rd on the road. “It is kind of frustrating, because we played very good baseball, and I lost the game in one inning. It was really just three mistakes, but they did damage on all of them. You can’t leave fastballs up when you are trying to get out of a jam,” said Moscoso after the game.
New York Mets 4 – 2 St. Louis Cardinals
St. Louis conceded their second straight win when they lost to Mets last night at the Citi Field where the visitors and former leaders were unable to preserve a minimal advantage set in the fifth term. Cardinals thus opened the score through Berkman who scored the first point of the game after five scoreless rounds. Mets broke back immediately though, through Reyes and Turner who brought a minimal lead for New York after Pagan doubled to right within the same round.
Murphy then doubled to center, allowing the same Turner and Beltran to make it 4-1 and draw a clear victory on the Citi. Finally, Cardinals could only go two points adrift thanks to Berkman who fired a 448-foot homerun late in the seventh. The last two innings went dry as Mets grabbed their 21st home win of the season.
New York have gone .500 this season, including 48 wins and losses, the victory over Cardinals being their fourth in the past ten games. As for the former leaders, St. Louis dropped third in the Central Conference with a .521 still positive percentage which features 50 victories and 46 defeats, the loss to Mets being their second in a row and sixth in the pas ten games.
Baltimore Orioles 6 – 2 Boston Red Sox
Orioles stunned the East leaders last night at the Orioles Park thanks to an early rally which saw them go three points ahead of the favorites, but also to a late one which brought them three more points within one term. As for Boston, they were unable to take any lead throughout the entire meeting. Jones brought the first lead in the second inning after Reynolds doubled to left, while Wieters doubled it right afterwards.
Markakis made it 3-0 in the third round after Wieters singled to right as Orioles were heading to a surprising win. Red Sox cut the deficit to one point in the fifth term, but never got the chance to go ahead of their opponents. Saltalamacchia fired a 371-foot homerun, being followed by Reddick who threatened with a comeback. Unfortunately for the visitors, that was the best they could do in front of a great-shaped Baltimore.
The next two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the eighth one brought Orioles three more points through Lee, who homered a 399 footer, Wieters and Reynolds who also hit a 409-foot homerun late in the meeting as Baltimore grabbed their 25th home win of the term. They remain though foot of the table in the East with a .415 record which features 39 wins and 55 losses, the victory over Red Sox being their third in the past ten games.
Boston, by contrast, remain top spot, 1.5 ahead of Yankees, with a .611 percentage which includes 58 wins and 37 defeats, the loss to Orioles being their second in the past ten meetings.
Toronto Blue Jays 6 – 5 Seattle Mariners
Seattle conceded their tenth straight victory last night at the Rogers Center where the game needed 14 innings to provide the winner. The two teams went head to head until the seventh term, but needed seven more terms to end the tight clash. Ryan brought the first lead in the first inning after Ackley singled to center, but Toronto broke back immediately through Lind who fired a 383 footer and Escobar who made it 2-1.
Seattle managed though to take a two-point lead in the second round thanks to Halman who hit a 380-foot homerun, Carp and Figgins who made it 4-2. Even more than that, Ryan put his side three points ahead minutes later, but mariners would lose the advantage and the pace later on. The next four innings went scoreless, but the seventh one brought the hosts exactly as many points as needed to stay in touch with the victory.
Hill cut the deficit to two points, while Patterson made it 4-5 after Thames sacrifice to left. Escobar sent the game into overtime after scoring a precious point for the Jays who were nearing the victory. The first four extra terms went dry for both teams, but the fifth one saw Davis score the winner at the right moment, following another sacrifice from McDonald.
Despite the win, Toronto remain far from touching the third place in the East as Rays have gone .495 this season with 48 wins and 49 losses, the victory over Seattle being their sixth in the past ten games. Mariners remain second from the bottom in the West with a .448 percentage featuring 43 wins and 53 losses, the defeat to Jays being their 26th on the road.
Florida Marlins 0 – 4 San Diego Padres
Padres managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire meeting with Florida last night at the Sun Life Stadium where the visitors scored the first two points within the first term. Maybin was the first to point for Padres, while Ludwick doubled the advantage right afterwards, following Hudson’s double to left. The next five innings went dry for the two sides as San Diego were heading towards a clear win on the East coast.
A throwing error committed by Cishek cost the away side to go three points ahead in the seventh as Forsythre made it 3-0 with Venable getting to third. Finally, Maybin singled to center as Venable gave his side a comprehensive win in the ninth inning.
Bottom Padres lie foot of the table in the West with a .433 record which includes 42 wins and 55 losses, the win over Florida being their second in the past ten games and 22nd on the road. Marlins are also bottom in the East with a poor .485 percentage, featuring 47 victories and 50 defeats, yesterday’s loss to padres being their second in the past ten games and 27th at home.
Colorado Rockies 12 – 3 Atlanta Braves
Rockies crashed Atlanta last night at the Coors Field where the hosts scored their first six points in a row and within the first three terms. Tulowitzki scored the first point with a 402 foot homerun, being followed by Ginzalez and Helton who made it 3-0 right afterwards. Furthermore, Gonzalez also fired a homerun in the second round, while Fowler extended the lead to five points as just.
Things got much worse for the favorites when Tulowitzki scored a sixth one in the third inning. Braves’ first and only replies came in the fourth and sixth rounds through Uggla who hit a couple of homeruns to put Atlanta four points adrift. But that was all the visitors could do as Colorado would build another impressive inning.
Smith tripled to center as Helton made it 7-2 in the sixth round, while Fowler tripled in the same direction, allowing Smith, Stewart and Iannetta to provide an eight-point advantage. As for the seventh term, it saw Helton and Tulowitzki propel the Rockies ten points ahead. Finally, Atlanta were allowed to score a last consolation point through McCann who scored a meaningless point in the eighth round.
Colorado are third in the West with a .474 record which incorporates 46 wins and 51 defeats, the victory over Braves being their fifth in the past ten games. On the other side, Atlanta are second, 3.5 behind leaders Phillies, with a .588 record featuring 57 victories and 40 losses, the defeat to Rockies being their fourth in the past ten games.
Pittsburgh Pirates 1 – 0 Cincinnati Reds
Pittsburgh seem ready to hold their leading position in the Central as they edged Reds last night at the PNC Park to go .5 ahead of Milwaukee. An early point scored by Harrison was sufficient for the hosts to pick their 25th home win and thus consolidate the top spot.
Pirates have gone .537 this season with 51 wins and 44 defeats, the win over Cincinnati being their third in a row and seventh in the past ten games. As for the Reds, they are fourth in the same table with a .485 record featuring 47 victories and 50 defeats, the loss to the new leaders being their second in a row and sixth in the past ten games.
