The trial in which the Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is accused of having sex with a minor started in Italy on Monday without either the Prime Minister or the famous dancer Karima el Mahroug, a.k.a. “Ruby the Heart-stealer” attending.
The judge dismissed all defense motions and set the next hearing for October 3, prompting the defense lawyer Niccolo Ghedini to slam the decision of judge Giulia Turri, and accuse the court in front of the press of not being able to organize a fair trial. The defense presented the court with 16 objections.
Berlusconi also had to appear in another court, where he was to respond to accusations of corruption. It was the first time he had to be in two courts at the same date.
Berlusconi came to the center of international media when accusations surfaced that he had paid to have sex with Ruby the Heart-stealer, and that he then used his office’s influence to attempt to spring her out of jail, after she had been caught shoplifting in Milan.
The attempt was fruitless, and brought him accusation of abuse of office, and a vote of non-confidence in December last year, which jolted seriously his political position.
Both the PM and the dancer admit that he gave her money, though Berlusconi denies it was for sex, while the dancer affirms it. If she is proven right by the court, Berlusconi can even face detention since paying a minor for sex is illegal in Italy.
At some point, Berlusconi passed a law by which government officials were shielded from legal prosecution while in office, but the law was attacked by the judges.
In the case of corruption, Berlusconi is accused of having bribed British lawyer David Mills to secure testimony in his favor in legal cases. Mills denied accusations, and the next trial hearing was set for September 19.
The scandals he is involved in are already showing results in the political field, as his hometown, Milan, turned left and voted for the Socialists, giving him one of the most drastic political defeats.
A month ago, the lower house of the parliament voted in favor of an economic package intended to save Italy from its economic difficulties.
