Hamburg after rolling past Albert Ramos whom the Frenchman ousted in two sets, 6-4, 6-2 to meet Radek Stepanek in the next round.
Monfils, who hasn’t won any title so far this season, needed just one hour and ten minutes to get rid of the Spaniard past whom he fired five aces and whom he broke three times. The French clinched the opener in just over half an hour, while the second set found him break his opponent twice. Monfils finished the game with a 58 first serve percentage and one double faults, compared to Ramos who had a better first serve percentage of 62, but who failed to convert any of the five break point opportunities.
Next up for the main favorite is Stepanek who beat Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-1, 7-5. The 13th seeded Italian conceded the first set quite easily, conceding three break points and converting just one. Concerning the second set, it highlighted the same Czech breaking his opponent twice, but also being threatened with a breaker. Fortunately, Stepanek managed to grab a late break which brought him the hard fought win and a third term berth.
The same day, second favorite Jurgen Melzer of Austria had some hard times against Daniel Gimeno whom he edged in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, the head to head series being now led 3-1 by the same Austrian. Melzer broke Gimeno six times out of six tries, finishing the game with a 69 first serve percentage and three aces. On the other side, Gimeno could only convert three of his eight break point opportunities which helped him to win the second set.
Melzer will next meet Fabio Fognini of Italy who has flown into the third round after ousting Romania’s Victor Crivoi 6-1, 7-5. On the same second half of the draw, Florian Mayer beat Marsel Ilhan of Turkey in two sets, 6-4, 7-6 to set a Juan Monaco meeting. Mayer exchanged seven break points with Ilhan whom he broke four times from nine opportunities. The second set found the Turkish pushing the term into breaker but he eventually lost it at the death, at five.
Ilhan finished the game with a much better first serve percentage, 69, compared to German’s 49. Mayer counterbalanced his errors with eight aces and a 63 percentage of points won. On the other side, Monaco stunned ninth favorite Janko Tipsarevic, beating him 6-2, 6-4 to set his first meeting of the year with Mayer. Monaco had a solid service, finishing the clash with a 71 first serve percentage compared to Serb’s 62 past whom he also fired four aces.
Also, he managed to create 12 break-point opportunities, but only converted three. As for the favorite, Tisparevic finished the game with four double faults and no break points. Maric Cilic, a 12th seed in Hamburg, edged Bastian Knittel in the second round, defeating him in three tough sets, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. The Croatian thundered 16 aces past the unseed German who conceded four break points throughout the meeting and only concerted two.
Cilic built 14 break point chances though, but he could only convert one third. On the other side, Knittel created 12 chances, but his poor return percentage cost him the victory, despite having a much better first serve percentage, 65 compared to Cilic’s 57. Next up for Cilkic is revelation Tobias Kamke who stunned Juan Ignacio Chela 6-1, 604 in the second term.
Said the crowd favorite: “I feel very well here. It’s my home. I live here, I practise here year-round. I just like the people watching here. I just get along with everyone very well and in front of your home crowd, to play good and to give a good performance is unbelievable. It’s a good feeling and I’m really looking forward for the next match.”
One of the biggest surprises came from Cedrik Marcel Stebe who has already become a real threat in Hamburg, taking into account that the German had ousted the 11th seed Nikolay Davydenko in two sets, 6-3, 7-6. Previously to this victory, Stebe had ousted Stuttgart champion and former world leader Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Stebe broke the Russian five times, hitting at the same time five aces and committing zero double faults. On the other side, Davydenko could only break his opponent three times. Kemke will next meet eighth favorite Fernando Verdasco who follows a 6-2, 6-3 win against Stuttgart finalist Pablo Andujar. Verdasco impressed with a 80 first serve percentage and seven breaks on today’s session, compared to his compatriot who finished the game with a 65 first serve percentage, and four breaks.
Third favorite Nicolas Almagro, winner in Costa do Sauipe, Buenos Aires and Nice, ousted Lukas Rosol 6-4, 6-4 after breaking him three times. This season’s Halle champion Philipp Kohlschreiber eased past Albert Montanes 6-1, 3-2 after the Spaniard abandoned the game due to an injury.
Gilles Simon is to face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the third round, the French ousted Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-1, while his next opponent overcame ALexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Mikhail Youzhny struggled for a straight-set win against Carlos Berlocq whom he eventually edged 7-5, 7-6 to face Julian Reister in the third round. The German stunned one of the main favorites Guillermo Garcia Lopez in two sets, 7-6, 6-2.
