Roberta Vinci has improved her Barcelona record to 13-1 yesterday after edging Laura Pous of Spain in three sets in the semi finals to become the main favorite at the $220,000 event.
Vinci beat Pous 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 and will next face Lucie Hradecka who also made the progress into the last term thanks to a two-set win over another Italian Sara Errani whom the Czech defeated 6-1, 7-5. Vinci has lost just one set this week in Barcelona, while Hradecka reached the final with the sheet clean.
Vinci needed two and a half hours to grab her second win of the year against Pous who managed to break the Italian early in the third set and build a three-game lead. Unfortunately, Vinci came from behind to push the set into tie break and clinch the victory after a 7-4 late advantage.
Roberta meets Hradecka for the second time in career, the 28-year-old leading the head to head series 1-0 thanks to a 6-4, 6-2 win grabbed at the 2009 Toronto event. She is also chasing her fourth career title, while the Czech is expected to give her best for the first career success.
Barrois, Medina play Estoril final
German Kristina Barrois has reached her first final of the season after beating Johanna Larsson in two sets 7-6, 6-4 at the Portuguese event to go one win from her first career title. But the 29-year-old player will have to pass world number 61 Anabel Medina who is chasing her tenth title of career.
The 28-year-old Spaniard stunned Romania’s Monica Niculescu 6-1, 6-3 in the semi finals and will meet Barrois for the second time. Medina, who starts the last term as favorite, is to face a very tough German who has gone 1-0 against her thanks to a clear victory at the 2009 Strasbourg event.
Said Barrois, who lies 71st in the WTA rankings: “I hope I can play some more years like this. It’s only my sixth year on the tour so I’m quite young in tennis years and I hope to keep getting better.” On the other side, Medina hopes she’ll be the one to hoist the Portuguese trophy: “I didn’t have such a good year last year, losing a lot of first rounds, so to be in a final again makes me very happy.”
