World No. 2 Novak Djokovic has gone 26-0 this season after ousting Blaz Kavcic in straight sets in the quarter finals. The 23-year-old Serb will next face compatriot and fellow Janko Tipsarevic.
Djokovic needed one hour and 25 minutes and is two wins from his second title at the 373,200-euro Serbia Open. The top seeder, who hasn’t lost any game so far this season, broke his Davis Cup team-mate four times and dropped one service through the meeting. Djokovic is chasing his 23rd career title and fifth of the season (Australian Open, Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami Masters).
Novak is to meet seventh-seeded Tipsarevic for the third time, having beaten the world number 36 twice, last occasion at the same Belgrade Open in 2009. On the other side, titleless Tipsarevic reached the semi finals following a three-set win over Somdev Devvraman of India whom the Serb defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
On their way to the semis, Djokovic beat Adrian Ungur 6-2, 6-3 in his debut, while Tipsarevic eliminated Kei Nishikori 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the first round and Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-0 in the second term. The 26-year-old reached the last 16 in 2009 and will have some hard times against the main favorite on Saturday.
On the second half of the table, Filipo Volandri and Feliciano Lopez will also fight for a place into the big final. The Italian stunned Marcel Granollers of Spain in two sets, 6-2, 6-4 to near his biggest success of the year. His next opponent, Lopez beat Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4 to set a seventh meeting with Volandri. The 37th-ranked Spaniard leads the head to head series 5-1, his last victory dating from 2007 at the Madrid Masters. Italian’s victory came back in 2005 at the Hamburg Masters.
