Researchers have recently discovered that people who have a choice or who have power, or even both, are more satisfied with themselves than those who have none.
According to the researchers, having power over others or at least having a choice makes people feel more in control and gives them high satisfaction. There are cases when people have both the choice and the power and that is even better, but when there is only the choice or only the power, people seem to be satisfied as well. However, when there is no choice and no power, people tend to feel less secure about themselves, and thus, less satisfied. The most important thing discovered by the researchers is that the two are interchangeable. If people have power over a great deal of people, they do are not so much interested in having choices, but when people do not have power, they clamor for choice. According to study author Dr. M. Ena Inesi of London Business School, “it feels good when you have choice, and it doesn’t feel good when choice is taken away.”
According to Inesi and coauthors, the need for personal control is the common ground for these two factors: power and choice. That means that power is represented by the control over what other people do, while choice is the control over your own actions. The study was based on some experiments made on people who had to read description of a boss and an employee and then they had to explain how they felt towards what they had to read. Some of the participants in the study were made to feel powerful, while other powerless. Then, all the participants were told they could buy either ice cream or eyeglasses from a store that only had 3 options or from one that had 15 options. People who before felt powerless, were more willing to drive a longer way or to way a longer time in line only to access the store with more options. The fact that they felt powerless made them crave for choice. In a similar experiment, when people were deprived of choice, they craved more for power.
According to Inesi, these discoveries are very important and useful at the workplace. Let’s say that you are the boss of a very important company, in order to make your employees feel better, you should give them the opportunity to chose between projects or the way they do their work, for instance. You, as a boss, feel in power and thus, you feel in control, and your employees will also feel in control, because they are given the chance to choose. Inesi also said that people can be happy with either power or choice, but people who have neither of them, tend to be highly dissatisfied. The best thing about having power or choice is that happy people work better and a sort of understanding should be made between employers and employees in order to keep things going in a fruitful manner.
