You have probably heard about the fact that online poker sites are being closed under charges of bank fraud, money laundering and that the government has broken some good anti-gambling laws.
While the government is busy trying to find ways to stop online gambling on poker sites, people across the United States of America are trying to “restore the peace” and find ways to be free to spend their spare time as they know best – playing poker. One of these people is Shaun Poland, a 25-year old, who lives in southern Maine. He has not been involved in any sort of civic activities until now. Now he is militating for the freedom of poker sites. He is posting videos on YouTube and leaving messages at President Obama’s Townhall on Facebook; he is writing letters and making phone calls. All he wants is to exercise his right to freedom. “In the United States, we always preach freedom. When it comes to something like online poker, this is something I do in my own house. I’m not forcing anyone to do it,” Poland said in a statement.
Furthermore, he became even more involved in the whole thing after the Justice Department froze 3 of the most popular poker sites. According to what Poland said, the whole situation is very offensive to him and other poker players. He said that he spend a huge amount of time in front of the computer, doing his job and that spending half an hour on a poker site relaxed him. He knows that not all people are drawn to this game, but those who are should be respected. Poland also said that he does not want to play poker for money; he only wants his rights as an American citizen to be respected.
Shaun Poland is not the only one militating for his rights. Charles Nesson, a professor at Harvard Law School, also began taking actions in the case. At Harvard, he is teaching his students how to use poker strategies in real life. According to him, playing poker helps people develop some good senses. The man is so involved in this that he even founded an organization called the Global Poker Strategic Thinking Society. The organization is based on views that poker is a game of skill that can teach people a great amount of important things such as strategic thinking and how to look at risk. Charles Nesson has been pushing the government to legalize online poker for a very long time, but to no end. For him too, poker is not about money, it is only about freedom.
Both Poland and Nesson are doing all they can, from calling the U.S. Attorney’s office in New York to posting videos on YouTube and Facebook in order to make more people join them. Poland has even created his own website where he is posting the responses he is getting from lawmakers. Of course, he is not a lobbyist and yes, his website has some typos, but at least he is doing something to defend his own rights. Both Poland and Nesson are questioning the handling of the human rights in a country popular for its freedom.
