Niculescu, who is chasing her first title of the season, will next play Anabel Medina of Spain who also reached the best four thanks to a 6-3, 7-5 win over Klara Zakopalova. World No. 59 will face the 61st-ranked Medina for the second time in career. The Spaniard has defeated the 23-year-old at the 2008 Dubai event.
Concerning the first half of the table, Johanna Larsson passed Alla Kudryavtseva in two sets, 6-2, 7-5, becoming one of the biggest surprises of the Portuguese tournament. The Swede will next meet Kristina Barrois of Germany who eased past the main favorite Alisa Kleybanova 6-4, 6-2.
Said delighted Larsson: “I’ve always loved playing on clay. My best results have always come on hardcourt but now it’s changing a little bit. It doesn’t really matter to me what surface the results are coming on though – I’m just happy they are coming!”
The 22-year-old Larsson will play the German for the second time in career. World No. 80 beat Barrois at the 2006 Stockholm tournament.
