Stanford final.
Williams needed one hour and 22 minutes to grab her third win against the French whom she had previously defeated at the US Open Grand Slam back in 2009. The 29-year-old American fired 11 aces past her opponent on Sunday final, providing a 78 first serve percentage and a 53 one on return points. Serena broke her opponent five times out of seven tries and conceded two in the first set, something which forced her to fight for the minimal lead which he eventually won thanks to a late break which stopped Bartoli from pushing the term into tie break.
The second final favorite also won 66 percent of service points, committing just a couple of double faults, compared to the Frenchwoman who committed eight and won just 34 percent of return points. The second set saw Bartoli concede two services and create zero break point opportunities, allowing the former world leader to rally past her in just under half an hour, after winning 80 percent of service points.
Said Serena: “I haven’t won a tournament that isn’t a Grand Slam in forever, so this is cool. I’m taking every tournament much more seriously now – not that I didn’t before, but now even more so. I definitely want to take this whole swing seriously. Believe it or not, I don’t love the grass and I do love playing on hardcourts.”
She had previously defeated Sabine Lisicki 6-1, 6-2 in the quarter finals, second favorite and old rival Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-3 in the quarters, Stanford doubles winner Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the second term and this year’s Stuttgart winner Julia Goerges 6-2, 6-3.
Previous to the final, Bartoli had grabbed a free last term berth after Dominika Cibulkova’s abandon. Fortunate French had only had to play one set against Ayumi Morita to make the progress through the semi finals after Japanese’s abandon. Anyway, she only played to matches entirely in Stanford. She beat Rebecca Marino of Canada 6-4, 6-3 in the second term which also marked her debut at the hard court event.
The head to head series between Williams and Bartoli have now gone 3-1 to the American whose first win comes from the 2003 Miami Masters. Bartoli’s only victory dates from this year’s Wimbledon Grand Slam.
