Chelsea might consider two bids for Luka Modric from arch London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and for the former Ballon d’Or winner Kaka. Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay has revealed that West Londoners are in desperate need for a midfielder with Modric top of their wishlist.
The former English champions have not made any big move so far this season as their new coach Andre Villas Boas has only brought keeper Thibaut Courtois of Genk, and given Betrand and Josh McEachran two long term extensions. “We really need to sit down with Andre and talk this through. Even though we’ve been travelling away, you can still be active in the marketplace nowadays. The communication is always there with our guys back in London or wherever they are at the present time around the world,” said Gouraly.
Chelsea, who has won five games of five under the Portuguese manager, has just returned from the Asian Cup, trophy the Blues won after a 2-0 success over Premier League rivals Aston Villa. Boas is not desperate though to make transfers as the Londoners lost the race for Xavier Pastore who signed a long term deal with French side PSG.
The Blues are to improve their bid for Modric whose move from the White Hart Lane wouldn’t be welcomed by Harry Redknapp who had looked keen to keep the player on his side. The 25-year-old Croatian has impressed over the last years with remarkable showings in both domestic and European competitions. He has scored nine goals and gathered 19 selections with Redknapp’s side which he has joined in 2008 after parting with his first club Dinamo Zagreb.
Modric, who is also a cornerstone at the national team of Croatia, is winner of three Croatian titles with Zagreb, and of the Spurs’ 2010-2011 Player of the Year award. He is still under contract with Tottenham, deal which runs through the 2014 season, but this might not be a big problem for Chelsea who already paid a release clause to FC Porto for Villas Boas.
But apart from Modric’s interest, who has started to become a more realistic one, Chelsea have reportedly been considered as a main candidate for Real Madrid’s star Kaka whose contract with Jose Mourinho side expires this summer. The Brazilian, winner of many important trophies, is likely to leave Santiago Bernabeu after only two years.
Kaka has scored 15 goals in 39 games and only won one trophy with the Spaniards, this term’s Copa del Rey. The former AC Milan star, Kaka is winner of the UEFA Champions League trophy with the Rossoneri, as well as of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and Ballon d’Or award. Some of his personal awards include the UCL Best Forward, Serie A Footballer of the Year and World Soccer Player of the Year 2007. Kaka is at his third club, having scored 70 goals in 193 games with AC Milan and 23 goals in 59 selections with his first side Sao Paolo.
Big spending Chelsea, who paid a lot of money on Fernando Torres, are still keen to sign a forwarder, although Didier Drogba signed a new extension with the Blues and Kalou and the Spaniard are also likely to be kept on Stamford Bridge side. The English have also considered an interest for Brazilian revelation Neymar of Santos who might join Real Madrid instead, though two other big sides are fighting for his services, including FC Barcelona and Manchester City.
The 19-year-old declared though that he would spend at least six more months with the Copa Libertadores champions, if not one year, in order to celebrate the club’s centenary. The four giants looked willing to pay Santos more than $60 million, but they are to expect until the winter for a potential move. Player’s agent Wagner Ribeiro had claimed that he would fight to keep the player one more season at Santos, but the deal has not been made yet.
Chelsea’s pre season includes five wins, including two 1-0 results against Portsmouth and Malaysia XI, two 4-0 results against Thailand All Stars and Kitchee, plus a 2-0 success over Villa in the Asian Cup. Next up for Boas’s side is Glasgow Rangers whom the Blues meet on August 6. The West Londoners will start the news season against Stoke City away, the game being scheduled to take place on August 14.
Chelsea finished the season second, nine points behind the new champions Manchester Untied who ousted them from the UEFA Champions League quarter finals, something which led to the sack of Carlo Ancelloti.
