Italy announced in a statement today that its ambassador to Syria was recalled for consultations after the “horrible repression against civilian population.” Italian foreign minister said it was urging all European state to recall their ambassadors from Syria.
The Italian decision comes after the announcement made by European leaders that the sanctions against Syria would be expanded, imposing asset freezes and travel bans against military and governmental figures in the Arab country.
The EU decisions include 35 leaders in Damascus, president Bashar al Assad being one of them. On the list there are four governmental entities as well. The names of those against whom bans and asset freezes were instituted would be released on Tuesday by the continental body.
Condemnations of the attacks launched on the first day of Muslim Ramadan against the population were also expressed from Washington, where president Obama called the attitude of Assad’s regime outrageous, while U.S. State Secretary Hillary Clinton said that the “slaughter” must stop immediately.
The situation was more complicated at the United Nations, where the security council was convened at the request of Germany, which demanded that a resolution be passed on Syria, one that had been stalled from mid-May when it was first tabled.
The division among the countries at the UN Security Council persisted, as German draft was backed by the European Union and the United States, but was dismissed by the BRIC countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China, and “wannabe” South Africa.

The Indian ambassador, who is the monthly chairman of the council, said that it would be reconvened on Tuesday to discuss again the situation in Syria, in hope that a milder resolution could be drafted to condemn the actions of the government in Damascus.
French foreign ministry’s spokesperson said on Monday that the regime in Damascus must be aware now more than ever that it will be held accountable for everything that happens in the country these days.
French government called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn the violence over the weekend in the Arab country.
EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton condemned the leadership in Syria, which, in her opinion, was unable to implement changes that are demanded by the population.
EU has an embargo on weapons and equipment that could contribute to the crackdown on the demonstrations in Syria.
100 people were reported dead after the Syrian government brought the military against the people in Hama, the city that has been protesting for months against Assad’s regime.
More than 1,600 people died since the unrest started five months ago, and 3,000 are reported missing.
