Gilles Simon has flown into the third term of the German event when the French eased past Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 6-1. Next up for this term’s Sydney tournament is Finnish Jarkko Nieminen who struggled past Alexandr Dolgopolov in the previous round.
Simon broke his opponent seven times and created 11 opportunities compared to the Ukrainian who finished the game with two break points and a double fault. Despite a much better first serve percentage, Stakhovsky, who was facing the world number 18 for the second time, conceded a couple of precious services in the opener, something which allowed Simon grab the minimal lead in just over an hour. As for the second set, it saw the same Frenchman set the pace and go five games ahead of the lifeless 45th-tanked to close out the game easier than expected.
