Tobias Kamke has reached the third term of the Hamburg event after stunning seventh seeded Juan Ignacio Chela in two sets, 6-1, 6-4. Next up for the German is either Marin Cilic or Bastian Knittel who will meet tomorrow in the second round.
Tobias finished the game with a 67 first serve percentage, managing at the same time to break his opponent four times. On the other side, Chela could only convert one of four break point chances and save other eight opportunities. The opener saw the German power through to a consistent lead thanks to a couple of early breaks which found the Argentine five games adrift.
Concerning the second set, it saw the same Kamke power through to a two-game lead he would convert into an unexpected win. He has now become a main threat for everyone in Hamburg. Tobias had previously crashed Pere Riba of Spain in two similar sets, 6-1, 6-1, but he is likely to face a tough opponent in the third term, especially if Cilic beats Knittel in his debut.
Said Kamke: “I feel very well here. It’s my home. I live here, I practise here year-round. I just like the people watching here. I just get along with everyone very well and in front of your home crowd, to play good and to give a good performance is unbelievable. It’s a good feeling and I’m really looking forward for the next match.”
One of the biggest surprises came from Cedrik Marcel Stebe. The 20-year-old ousted the former world number one and the Stuttgart winner Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The German will next meet the winner between Stuttgart finalist Pablo Andujar and his compatriot Fernando Verdasco. Andujar has reached the second term after easing past Julien Benneteau of France 6-2, 6-2.
Andujar finished the game with a 64 first serve percentage, four breaks and two aces, compared to his opponent who provided a 71 first serve percentage, two aces and committed four double faults. Marsel Ilhan stunned the Halle finalist Philipp Petzschner in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6. The Turkish finished the clash with a an impressive 65 first serve efficiency and four of five break point conversions, while the German had a 55 first serve percentage, five double faults and three break points.
He will next meet either Juan Monaco or Janko Tipsarevic who are to meet on Wednesday. The Argentine beat Simone Bolelli in two sets, 6-3, 7-5, while the Serb has been favored by a BYE in the opening day. Mikhail Youzhny ousted Carlos Berlocq 7-5, 7-6 in the second round and will play Julian Riester of Germany in the next phase, who stunned Guillermo Garcia Lopez 7-6, 6-2.
Fourth favorite Youzhny fired six aces past the Argentine who conceded the victory despite having a much better first serve percentage. His next opponent Reister beat Lopez thanks to a 67 first serve percentage – compared to the Spaniard’s 59, plus four of seven break point conversions. Jarkko Nimeninen and Gilles Simon have also flown in the third term.
The Finnish beat Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while his next opponent Simon eased past Sergiy Stakhsovsky 6-2, 6-1. Top seed Gael monfils is to make his debut against Albert Ramos who has secured a second term berth thanks to a 6-2, 6-4 victory against Adrian Mannarino of France. Radek Stepanek is to meet Anderas Seppi in the second round. The Czech ousted Andeas Beck of Germany in two tough sets, 7-5, 7-6 to meet the Italian – who has been favored by a BYE in the opening day – for the first time this season.

Romania’s Victor Crivoi and Italian Fabio Fognini are also expected to fight for a third term berth. The Romanian has already grabbed a win in Hamburg after beating Guillermo Olaso 6-4, 6-3 in the opening phase.
