Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has set an all-Russian second term after defeating Valeria Solovieva 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the Azerbaijan event in Baku. The world number 13 will next meet Elena Bovina who has made a uneasy progress.
This term’s Monterrey champion Pavlyuchenkova is at her first appearance since Wimbledon, and is looking good in Baku, tournament which she has started as second favorite. The Russian faced an early scare against Solovieva who threatened with a breaker at one point. Fortunately for the favorite, a late break allowed her to grab the opener in over half an hour. Concerning the second set, it saw the same youngster power through to a two-game lead to clinch the victory in nearly one hour and a half.
Next up for Pavlyuchenkova is Elena Bovina whom the 20-year-old will be playing for the second time. Bovina beat Zarina Diyas in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, but the world number 307 will surely have some hard times against her compatriot whom leads the head to head series 1-0 thanks to a three-set win grabbed at the 2008 Stockholm event.
On the same second half of the table Galina Voskoboeva blanked Sofia Shapatava of Georgia in front of whom she managed to keep the sheet clean throughout the entire meeting, beating her 6-0, 6-0. The Kazak will next face Monica Niculescu of Romania who has made an easy progress thanks to Eirini Georgatou’s abandon.
Said Voskoboeva after the game: “It doesn’t happen very often, so I’m really happy with that. I played pretty quick and it was not that tough, which is good for me with the hot weather conditions here. Still, even in a 60 60 match, it’s not that easy to keep your concentration the whole time.” Aravane Rezai and Elena Vesnina will also play for a third term berth. The French player beat Kamilla Farhad in the opening round 6-0, 6-2, while her next opponent overcame Yana Buchina 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
Ksenia Pervak will meet Vesna Dolonts in a all-Russian meeting. Pervak edged Noppawan Lertcheewakarn 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the first round, while Dolonts eliminated Alona Bondarenko in straight similar sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Concerning the first half of the draw, top seed Vera Zvonareva is to make her debut against Nigina Abduraimova of Uzbekistan. The winner between the two will meet either Kiristina Kucova or Tetyana Arefyeva. Mariya Koryttseva stunned Elena Baltacha of Scotland 6-1, 7-5 to set a Anastasiya Yakimova clash in the second round. The Belarusian has also made a two-set progress after defeating Valeria Savinykh 6-3, 6-4.
Ekaterina Makarova and Kateryna Bondarenko are to meet for the third time. The world number 75 Bondarenko, who leads the head to head series 2-0, beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-3, 6-2 in the first round, while Makarova follows a 6-1, 6-4 win against Anne Kremer of Luxembourg. Ukraine’s two wins date from the 2007 Luxembourg and the 2011 Doha event respectively.
Finally, Tatia Mikadze and Anna Tatishvili will meet in a 100% Georgian clash. The first one blanked Nina Khrisanova 6-0, 6-0, while Tatishvili upset Evgeniya Rodina 6-4, 6-2.
