President Alpha Conde of Guinea survived on Tuesday an assassination attempt as gunmen fired on his house, between 3 am to 5 am, when shooting broke out, and a grenade exploded inside the compound, destroying parts of it.
One of his bodyguards was killed and several others were wounded, according to the president’s chief of staff.

Conde, 73, spoke on the radio saying that the security detail fought heroically to defend him until reinforcement arrived.
The president called on the population to remain calm, and reiterated that the promises he made to voters seven months ago, when he became the first democratically elected president of the country, will be carried out.
Another round of shooting broke out at his house hours after he delivered this message to the people on the radio.
Conde said that since his destiny was in the hands of God no enemy could derail the country from its glorious path.
Soldiers dispersed across the capital which lays on a peninsula on Africa’s western coast, military helicopters circled overhead, schools and shops were closed.
Tens of millions were invested in this country to ensure democratic elections, and it is considered that a possible coup would throw the country in chaos, and that would have consequences in the whole region.
