Vinci survives Basbos's test to progress
Timea Basbos tested top seed Roberta Vinci in the second term of the $220,000 Hungarian event, winning the first set against the Italian who eventually overcame the host 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to meet Zuzana Kucova in the quarter finals.
Unlike the first term, which saw Vinci crash Lenka Jurikova 6-1, 6-0, the Hertogenbosch champion Italian suffered a 0-1 set deficit against unseeded Hungarian who stole the opener at four. But the next second terms saw the world number 25 overcome her to set a quarter final meeting with another unseeded, Kucova who stunned Alona Bondarenko 6-3, 6-1 to face Vinci for the first time ever.
Previous to the second term win, she had ousted Mathilde Johansson of France 7-6, 7-5 to near her best season performance. On the same first half of the table, Kateryna Bondarenko defeated Olga Savchuk 6-3, 6-2 to play Klara Zakopalova in the quarter finals who also needed two sets to get rid of Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia.
Concerning the second half of the draw, second favorite Sara Errani, who is also chasing her first title of the season, eased past Stefanie Vogele of Switzerland 6-3, 6-1 to set a tough meeting against Anabel Medina who also blanked Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 6-2, 7-5. The two are expected to meet for the fourth time ever. The world number 35 Errani elads the head to head confrontations 3-1, having last defeated the 28-year old Medina at the 2010 Marbella event, the same place where the 43rd-ranked Spaniard had defeated her in 2009.
Errani’s first two wins date from the 2007 Bali and 2008 Portoroz events respectively. Said Medina after the game: “I took a 5-1 lead and won the set, 6-2. In the second set, my opponent began to play much better and I had to fight really hard to keep myself in the match. I went up 5-3 but she leveled the set again. Then my play became more solid and I managed to finish more points at the net.”
Errani had previously eliminated Romania’s Madalina Gojnea 6-3, 6-1, while Medina had sent Anastasia Pivovarova packing thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 easy win in the opening term. Finally, Romania’s Irina Begu is to fight Estrella Cabeza for a semi final berth. The Romanian ousted Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-4, while her next opponent follows a 7-6, 6-3 win grabbed against Eva Birnerova of Czech Republic in the second round.
