This comes while the staff at the paper, prepare the final edition of News of the World this Sunday.
Labour has sent a notification to No 10 in order to get a judge appointed so that he can start an investigation on this matter.
Yesterday evening, a 63 year old man was the third arrested during the day as suspect, and became part of the police probe. He was detained at an address in Surrey with the charge of corruption. The police did a property search.
Meanwhile, former NoW editor Andy Coulson was released on police bail alongside with former royal editor Clive Goodman. Both editors were arrested Friday. Mr Coulson was transported to the Lewisham police station in London with the suspicion of attempting to intercept communication and corruption. Goodman was actually jailed in 2007 for the crime of phone hacking. This time he was arrested for corruption.
Shadow culture secretary Ivan Lewis asked the prime minister on Saturday, for a series of discussion that would place them in the position of picking a judge and launch an independent inquiry on the scandal.
BBC political correspondent Ben Geoghegan stated that Labour’s letter contained reports which proved that an impressive number of emails were deleted at News International in order to obstruct the undergoing investigations from Scotland Yard regarding phone hacking. Will this solve the problem?
News International denied the claim, the correspondent adds.
Yesterday, David Cameron made public a couple of details regarding the two new inquiries that will set things right once and for all.
The first one is destined to find out why did the police did such a poor job on the first investigation, and what is truly going on at News of the World and other papers for that matter.
The second inquiry will target ethics and culture in the press.
With the purpose of defending the decision Cameron made when employed Mr. Coulson. Cameron sad that he decided to give him another chance, but apparently it failed, and that the decision to hire Mr. Coulson was his.
The 168 year old tabloid has some serious accusations to deal with: hacking celebrities or politicians phones is a grave violation of intimacy. The police have identified over 4000 possible targets so far. How can we even dare answer the phone?
