US sailors
The US Navy needs to take the unprecedented step of firing some of the low-ranking petty officers to help reduce USA’s costs during its slumping economic recovery. Apparently the Navy has a manpower surplus.
Around 3,000 young sailors will be released from their jobs because of the current economical problems. This action is taken after the latest government report revealed that the unemployment rate has reached 9.2%. This rate marks the 29 months in a row when the rate exceeded 8 percent, a record established in the Great Depression period.
The US Navy will review in August the cases of 16,000 sailors and will decide which ones of them will remain without jobs. About 1 percent of the Navy positions will be eliminated, that means about 3,000 sailors. The jobs cuts will be made taking into consideration the individual performance and the experience records.
This situation is totally opposite to that of the military which four years ago had a lot of problems with recruiting people for fighting in Iraq. There were people who said that the Army didn’t have enough soldiers to conduct the wars. But now, when the White House decided to cut spending and retreat the troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army will no longer need men to employ.
The statements immediately appeared. Mike Coffman who served in the Marine Corps and now is part of the House Armed Services Committee said that this situation isn’t good for the low-ranking petty officers because they will remain without their jobs as many other Americans. In the same situation as the US Navy is the Air Force which will have to make a similar reduction. It will review more than 9,000 records of officers and around 400 will be let go.
From 2005 to 2010, the retention rate for sailors who served between one and six years in the US Navy has increased by 10 percent. The Navy has registered a manpower surplus in 3 different job categories: avionics technicians, jet engine mechanics and electricians.
Retired Major General Bob Scales said that the Navy’s job cuts are only the beginning. In his opinion, other services will have to face the same budget reduction. He also stated that “the Air Force and the Navy have gone down in strength” during the last years and now, when the troops return from Iraq and Afghanistan, the ground services will apply similar reduction measures.
In January 2011, Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates stated that the Pentagon will cut 27,000 active-duty soldiers and 15,000 sailors from the Marine Corps until 2015 due to the fact that the wars are ending. In addition, in October this year the Army will reduce its ranks by 22,000 which means that many other job seekers will appear on a weak job market with only few good jobs available. What future awaits these people?
