Cubs Edge Nationals In Epic
Chicago stun Washington in a 19-point show
Cubs stunned Washington in a 19-point epic last night at the Nationals Park where the visitors were led 0-8 at one point. Chicago finally edged the capital thanks to a late comeback which saw them point ten times only in the last four terms.
Washington had a tremendous strong start, managing to build a comfortable seven-point lead only in the third term. Hernandez and Bernadina brought the first lead for the Nationals after Espinosa singled to center, while the same Espinosa made it 3-0 minutes later, following Morse’s single to center. Even more than that, the home side suggested a comprehensive win as Zimmerman, Morse and Werth drew the potential win by making it 6-0.
Finally, Ankiel scored even a seventh point for his side as a victory seemed to be just a matter of time. Zimmerman ended the early session with an eighth one, but things were just about to get wild. Cubs, who hadn’t given any life sign in the first terms, stunned their opponents with a nine-point run set in the sixth, seventh and eight rounds. Ramirez triggered the comeback after cutting the deficit to seven, following Soriano’s single to left.
Soto and Byrd followed by with a couple of more points, but still, the Cubs were condemned to score at least five more points to stay in touch with the win, something which couldn’t be foreseen at the moment. DeWitt hit the first homer of the meeting in the same round, his 359 footer putting Chicago four points adrift. Soriano and Barney made it 6-8 right afterwards as thing started to become complicated for the losing pace Nationals.
Pena, too, fired a 389-foot homer in the seventh as Ramirez evened the situation as just. He would also single to right in the eighth term for Castro’s most precious point which brought his side the first unexpected lead of the night. Nationals threatened though with a turnover through Bernadina who broke back in the same term. Finally, it was Campana to give the Cubs one of the most amazing wins of the season, scoring the winner after Barney’s double.
Cubs remain second from the bottom though with a .404 record which includes 36 wins and 53 losses, the win over Washington being their fourth in the past ten games and 16th on the road. On the other side, Nationals are also second from the bottom in the East with a .506 still positive percentage which features 45 victories and 44 defeats, the loss to Cubs being their fifth in the past ten games and 16th at home.
Said a delighted manager Mike Quade: “You’re so proud of them for continuing to play. Now let’s make it easier on ourselves and try to play a little smarter baseball and continue with that kind of effort.” Barney, too looked stunned by Cubs performance, claiming that “when you’re down 8-0, it’s really easy to roll over. I wouldn’t say that I thought the game was over after they scored eight runs, but history shows it’s tough to come back.”
Chicago will next meet Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at the PNC Park, while Nationals face Colorado Rockies the same day at the Nationals Park.
