News of the World no more
News of the World staff directed their fury at the editor Rebekah Brooks last night. She has been the paper’s editor through many controversial years.
Mrs Brooks who is currently the chief executive of the newspaper’s parent company: News International, literally had to face a “lynch mob” when she announced the staff that News of the World would have its final edition on Sunday.
Staff members claim that she was in tears when she delivered the news but she was almost kicked out by the Fleet Street veteran Colin Myler, and she needed the security to escort her out.
It is said that staff members cheered when Mrs Brooks offered her resignation two days ago, on Wednesday night, yet her resignation request was turned down. One of the staff member said that they would gladly accept it in the company’s name, and that they were all feeling “fatalistic”. He also said that Colin Myler informed them that the decision to close down the paper was made in New York. That the moment shares started to drop, the investors cut them off.
Mrs. Brooks attempted to justify her actions, by claiming that “the actions of a few had led to this” but was quickly dismissed and accused of being “one of the few”, that she forgot to mention that part. Afterwards she offered to answer a couple of questions, but Myler told her to leave the floor immediately, afterwards claiming that the entire paper was killed to save one person.
A journalist who wished to remain anonymous blamed Brooks for loosing all of their jobs, and that saving her job came at the cost of 200 jobs lost. How is that possible?
On the other hand, the chairman of News International, James Murdoch stood by Mrs. Brooks. He insisted that she should keep her job. Rebekah Brooks denied any knowledge of possible hacking. Most of the 200 employees were relatively young on the job and didn’t have many connections with the newspaper when Mrs. Brooks lead the paper.
Employees have been offered a consultation period of 90 days which will be paid. Yet, will it represent the amount of work those people placed in the paper?
