Malaysia Prepares for Arab-like Unrest
Malaysian Police
The wave of change that sprang in the Arab world at the beginning of this year seems to have reached a large Muslim state in Southeast Asia, as Malaysia is preparing for a protest on Saturday in the capital of the country, Kuala Lumpur, in spite of draconic measures the government has employed in order to prevent the event from escalating.
The demonstration was organized by a group of 62 non-government organizations who protest against different abuses, such as vote-rigging, in the recent state election.
The non-governmental organizations are called in Malay Berish, which translates “clean,” and their protest was named “Walk for Democracy.”

The government declared last week Berish an illegal organization and warned that everyone who would wear the yellow color of the organization would be detained.
200 people have already been arrested on various charges like “illegal assembly” or even “waging war against the King.” Some of them are held indefinitely, without trial.
Leaders of the Berish reject accusations that they fight against the king or that they provoke unrest in the country, adding that they wanted a government elected by means of a free and fair democratic process, not by means of protests in the street, like in Egypt, Syria, and Tunisia.
A military exercise was conducted by the police officers, who held a banner that read “Disperse or we will shoot.”
No one knows what will happen on Saturday, but many expect the protest to degenerate in spite of the assurances that it would be a peaceful one.
Meanwhile, the Arab spring continues through summer in countries like Syria where violent demonstrations continue.
Near a half a million people protested in the streets of the Syrian city of Hama, where the unrest started, while the regime blames the United States for interfering in the affairs of the Syrian state.
