Isner reaches Newport semis
Main favorite John Isner has set a Tobias Kamke semi final after the American ousted compatriot Alex Bogomolov Jr. in straight sets in the Newport event quarter finals, 7-6, 6-4. His next opponent follows a hard-fought victory grabbed against Edouard Roger Vasselin.
Isner fired 21 aces against Bogomolov, but had some hard times especially in the opener which saw the main favorite put into big difficulty by his conational who managed to push the first term into the breaker. Unfortunately, Bogomolov failed to take the first lead of the game, being beaten at five in the tie-break. Isner had a 76 first serve positive percentage, committing at the same time a double fault. On the other side, Bogomolov finished the game with a 66 poor first serve percentage, five double faults and zero aces.
Isner is now eyeing his first title of the year, being expected to meet Kamke in the semi finals. The German overcame Edouard Vasselin after surviving an early scare, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, being one win from his best season performance. Kamke has only dropped one set so far this week in Newport as the French was the only one to cause him some trouble. Kamke finished the game with one ace, five double faults, four breaks and a 56 first serve percentage, compared to Vasselin who had a 61 first serve percentage, three aces, a coupled of double faults and a single break point conversion out of four tries.
On the other side, the German created himself 13 break point opportunities and converted just four of them, fortunately, very precious ones which allowed him to stay in touch with the win despite the poor start. Kamke is to meet Isner for the first time ever, but wills tart the clash as second favorite. Previously to the quarter final wins, Kamke had ousted Donald Young 7-6, 6-4 and Alex Bogdanovic 7-6, 6-3, while Isner had blanked Karol Beck 6-3, 6-2 in the opener and Arnaud Clement 7-6, 6-4 in the second term.
On the other half of the draw, revelation Oliviver Rochus of Belgium has secured a final four berth after blanking Matthew Ebden of Australia 7-6, 6-3. He will next meet Michael Yani of Untied States who has also reached the semi finals after edging Denis Kudla in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Rochus finished the Ebden clash with a poor 47 first serve percentage, two aces and a couple of breaks, compared with the French who had a 63 first serve percentage, five aces and four double faults which cost him the precious progress.
As for Yani’s quarter final win, the American finished the game against Kudla with seven aces, a 57 first serv percentage and eight break points. Kudla also managed to convert five of eight break-point conversions, only to be stunned 3-6, 7-6, 5-7. Yani had previously ousted Dudi Sela 7-6, 603 in the opening day and had also taken advantage of Tommy Haas’s abandon in the next term. Concerning Rochus’s progress, the Belgian had previously blanked Nicolas Mahut 6-4, 7-6 in the second term and Greg Jones 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the opening day.
