Red Sox lsoe to Seattle as Yanks near top spot
Boston are very close to losing the top spot as the East leaders have conceded the second straight loss when they were defeated by Mariners 3-5 on Sunday at the Safeco Field. Red Sox are now just .5 ahead of their main followers Yankees who are just one win from taking back the leading position.
Seattle dominated their opponents throughout the entire meeting as Boston could only cut deficits in the fourth and eighth term. The first two innings went scoreless for both teams, while the third one saw Seattle take a three point consistent lead. First, Ja Wilson reached on infield single to shortstop as Wells made it 1-0. Guttierez then hit a sacrifice fly to left allowing the same Ja Wilson double the lead with Seager getting to third.
Finally, Carp singled to right for Seager’s third point, the last one of the early rally. Boston cut the deficit in the fourth inning through Gonzalez who made it 1-3 after Lowrie hit a sacrifice fly to left, but that was the best the visitors could do on Safeco. Mariners improved their advantage to four points in the next two rounds through Suzuki and Wells who fired a 377 foot homerun in the sixth.
Red Sox were allowed two more points in the eighth when Youkilis hit a 390 foot homerun and Pedroia made it 3-5. Said Furbush after the game: “Everything kind of was working, depending on the hitter. I’ve faced these guys before, so there were a few things I wanted to stick to in certain situations, certain counts, certain hitters.”
Despite the win, Seattle remain foot of the table in the West with a .437 poor record which includes 52 wins and 67 losses, the victory over the leaders being their second in a row, fifth in the past ten games and 31st at home where they have finally switched positive (31-30).
