Serena wins 39 career title to climb 31 in the rankings
Former world leader Serena Williams has captured her second title of the year when the American defeated Samantha Stosur in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the last term of the $2,050,000 Toronto Masters.
World number 80 Serena, winner of this term’s Stanford event, is back to winning days as she was a real threat in Toronto where all the top 20 players had lined up. A late break helped the American to take the first lead in nearly half an hour, something which must have given her a lot of confidence for the second set, taking into account that the world number ten allowed her to go four games ahead and claim the long awaited victory.
Serena has now gone 4-2 over the Aussie whom she had previously defeated at the 2010 Australian Open. On the other side, Stosur’s last win dates from the 2010 French Open, while the first one from the 2009 Sydney event. The victory has propelled Williams on the 31st position and has plenty of chances to reach the top 20 at the end of the season.
Said Williams after the game: “I’m so excited. I never expected to do this well. I’m just so happy to be playing again, let alone winning. It’s cool.” Stosur admitted Serena’s fourth win claiming that “for me to be able to win, I had to play close to my best tennis. I wasn’t quite at that mark. At 4-all I had 40-15 up on serve. You never want to lose serve, but especially being up in the game and holding quite comfortably until that point, it’s very disappointing to lose that.”
En route to the final, Williams had eased past Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-3 in the semi finals, Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final eight term, Kim Clijster’s killer Jie Zheng 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the third round, Julia Goerges 6-1, 7-6 in the second one and Alona Bondarenko 6-0, 6-3 in the opening day.
On the other side, Stosur had previously eliminated Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 in the semis, Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter final, this term’s French Open champion Li Na 6-2, 6-4 in the third term, Aleksandra Wozniack 6-3, 6-4 in the second phase and Ayumi Morita 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the first day.
Serena has already lined up at the Cincinnati event where she will make the debut against Lucie Hradecka. Stosur has also confirmed her presence at the American event, being expected to start the adventure against Shuai Zhang of China. If both Williams and Samantha pass the first term tests, they will meet in the second round.
