Google has bought out Motorola Mobility

Wow. In the biggest news to hit the Android world in pretty much the last 2 years, Google has bought out Motorola Mobility, the US smartphone division of Motorola for a cool sounding cash deal of £7.6BN with an aim to further cement Android in to a market leading OS in the future. What is interesting to note is that so far since the history of Android, Google has been reluctant to jump head deep in to the world of hardware (apart from maybe Nexus branded handsets) so it is fair to say that Google has just become a direct hardware competitor to other handset manufacturers such as Apple, Nokia and Blackberry.
On the buy out, Google has said that it is the perfect match, and that Motorola’s commitment to Android makes the purchase a good one.
“Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers.” Said Larry Page, Google CEO.
Technology analysts have long predicted that over half of the world’s smartphone’s (that’s one heck of a lot btw) will be using Android software by the end of 2012, as manufacturers have rushed to adopt Google’s operating system rather than develop their own; key reasons for this include it being open source and having an already developed app marketplace.
During operation, Google is said to be operating Motorola Mobility as a separate business meaning that some things will unlikely change at Motorola Mobility HQ.
