Montreal. Nole, winner of nine titles this season, has improved his year record to 53-1 after beating Mardy Fish 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the final term.
Djokovic broke this term’s Atlanta champion three times and conceded two services, both in the second set, but finished the game with a much better first serve percentage. The Serb took the first lead after breaking Fish twice in the opener, but conceded the second set after a poor service percentage. The American thus pushed the meeting into a third set decider, but failed to set the pace, allowing Nole to break him one more time for a hard fought victory.
“History making, of course it’s special,” said Djokovic after the meeting. “Well, it was the final. There was a lot of tension going on. It was a very close match. He wanted to win that match as much as I did. That’s why we were quite intense. It was a mental fight, as well. It was not just physical. But I managed to hold my composure when I needed to.”
He finished the game with a 64 first serve percentage, winning at the same time 64 percent of service points and 40 on return, compared to his opponent who had a 52 first serve percentage, winning just 60 percent of service points and 36 of return ones. En route to the final, the 24-year-old Serb had ousted injured Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the semi final, Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters, Marin Cilic 7-5, 6-2 in the third term and Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 6-1 in his debut.
On the other side, Fish, who was the only one to steal a set from the Serb, had previously eliminated Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4 in the final four term, Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 in the quarters, Ernests Gulbis 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the third term and Feliciano Lopez 6-2, 6-3 in the second one.
