First favorite Robin Soderling crashed Tomas Berdych 6-1, 6-0 in the Bastad semi finals to meet second seed David Ferrer in the last term, who also blanked compatriot Nicolas Almagro in straight sets.
The Swede broke Berdych five times, while his opponent, who managed to create four break opportunities, was unable to convert any of the chances, conceding the last set at zero. Soderling, winner of the Brisbane, Rotterdam and Marseille events, needed just one hour and ten minutes to grab his seventh win over the world number eight, the head to head series between the two having gone 7-3 with Czech’s last victory dating from the 2010 Miami Masters event.
Soderling finished the game with a 62 first serve percentage and three aces, compared to Berdych who had a 57 percentage, two aces and two double faults. The Czech allowed the world number five to create 11 break-point chances, something which allowed the crowd favorite to build consistent advantages throughout the entire meeting, but also to keep the sheet clean within the last term.
On the second side of the draw, second favorite David Ferrer beat conational Almagro in straight easy sets, 6-1, 6-3 to set his 14th meeting with Soderling who has last met at the 2010 World Tour Finals in London. Ferrer fired five aces past Almagro whom he broke five times out of six tries and whom he defeated in just over an hour. On the other side, Almagro, a fourth seed in Bastad, broke his fellow just once, finishing the game with three aces and a 54 first serve percentage.
Winner of the Auckland and Acapulco events, Ferrer is chasing his second title in Bastad after the 2007 success, having gone11-4 at this tournament. Said the Spaniard: “It’s going to be a very difficult match tomorrow against Robin. He’s playing unbelievable this week. I need to play my best tennis to beat him and to return very well as he has a great serve. Every final is special for me. I know people will support him, but I will try and play my game.”
The head to head series between the two is led by Soderling who has defeated Ferrer nine times, last occasion at the 2010 World Tour Finals. As for the world number eight, the 29-year-old last upset Soderling at the 2010 Valencia tournament. En route to the final, Soderling has eliminated Potito Starace 6-3, 6-04 in the quarter finals and Diego Junqueira of Argentine 6-0, 6-1 in the previous round.
Ferrer had previously defeated Austrian Andreas Haider Maurer 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters and Pere Riba 6-2, 7-6 in the second term. So, both Soderling and Ferrer has the sheets clean, something which could lead to a very tight game on Sunday.
