Former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero, who is at his third tournament this season, edged this week’s revelation Federico del Bonis in three sets, after surviving an early scare 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Next up for the Spaniard is either compatriot Pablo Andujar or Lukasz Kubot.
Ferrer beat the Argentine qualifier in just over two hours and is in front of his biggest success of the year as he has started the German event as unseeded. The 31-year-old conceded the first set in nearly 40 minutes, but managed to come from behind and stun the world number 204 Bonis with a two-set revenge which have propelled him into the last term. Ferrero had previously defeated Marcel Granollers 6-4, 6-3 in the quarters and Mikhail Youzhny 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. The opening day brought him another easy win against Bastian Knittel of Germany who he ousted 6-2, 6-4.
Said the Spaniard: “He was playing very powerfully with his forehand, and today with the sun the ball was unbelievably fast, making it very easy to make mistakes. The victory today was very important because I’m coming back from injury and winning four matches in a row, getting some rhythm and happiness and confidence.”
On the other side, Bonis had previously eliminated Pavol Cervenka who had also ousted Gael Monfils’s killer Victor Hanescu, 6-1, 6-2. The first round brought him a 6-2, 6-3 victory over favorite Florian Mayer, while the second one saw the Argentine beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-4, 6-3. Concerning the second half of the draw, Pablo Andujar and Lukasz Kubot of Poland are to fight for a final berth.
The Spaniard follows a 6-2, 6-1 win against Cedrik Marcel Stebe, while tired Kubot follows a third straight three-set win grabbed against Santaigo Giraldo in the third round. Previous to the victory against Giraldo, Kubot had edged Guillermo Garcia Lopez 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Danielo Gimeno 7-6, 3-6, 6-2.
