World number 39 Anabel Medina has gone one win from her fourth Palermo success after defeating Petra Cetkovska 7-5, 6-3. The Spaniard, who has gone 30-3 at the $220,000 Sicily event, will next meet either Flavia Pennetta or Polona Hercog.
The 28-year-old had a slow start, allowing her opponent to threaten with a tie-break in the opener. Fortunately for the favorite, Medina grabbed the opener thanks to a late break which helped her capture the minimal advantage and thus stay in touch with the final berth. Concerning the second set, it highlighted the same 2004-06 champion power through to a three-game lead she managed to preserve and convert into a big win. Medina is now one win from her second season title after she won the big success grabbed in Estoril in April.
Medina had previously defeated tough Romanian Irina Begu, a finalist at the Budapest event last week, whom she edged 6-2, 1-6, 6-0. In the second round she beat Lara Arruabarrena 6-12, 7-5, while the opening day brought her a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Italian Anna Floris. Concerning the first half of the draw, Flavia Pennetta is to face Polona Hercog in the semi finals.
The only Italian remained on course for the home event follows an easy win over Tsvetana Pironkova whom she ousted 6-2, 6-2 in the final eight round. On the other side, the Poland player has also proved to be in great shape as Hercog ousted Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters. Previous to the last four she had eliminated Alberta Brianti of Italy 6-2, 6-4 and Karin Knapp 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
En route to the semis, Pennetta has beaten Anastasia Grymalska and Mathilde Johansson who created her a lot of trouble in the second round when the top seed survived an early scare before cruising through a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win. The head to head series between the world number 21 Pennetta and 37th-ranked Polona is led by the 29-year-old who beat the Polish at the 2010 French Open Grand Slam. Pennetta will be chasing her tenth title of career, while Hercog is two wins from her second ever singles success.
