Pirates have taken the Central Conference lead after blanking Astros 4-0 on Friday night at the Minute Maid Park where the visitors grabbed one of their most precious wins of the season. Former leaders Cardinals and Brewers have dropped one position each, allowing Pittsburgh to capture the top spot thanks to a remarkable recent performance.
Pittsburg also started to build streak, the win over Houston being their second in a row. Presley opened the score in Texas last night in the first inning, after Walker singled to center. The second inning went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw the same away side build a three-point advantage thanks to the same Presley and D’Arnaud who brought a consistent lead after McCutchen tripled to center. The next four terms also went dry as Astros were still struggling for a come back.
Unfortunately, it didn’t come, but on the contrary, Pittsburgh drew the clear victory in the eighth round through Paul who made it 4-0 also thanks to an error committed by baseman Keppinger. Pirates have picked the leading position, having gone .527 this term, the same as St. Louis, including 48 wins and 43 defeats, the victory over Houston being also their seventh in the past ten games and 235th on the road.
On the other side, Houston have dropped to a .323 poor percentage, the worst in the league, which features 30 wins and 63 losses, the defeat to Pittsburgh being their fifth in a row, ninth in the past ten games and 34th at the Minute maid Park. They will next meet the same Pittsburgh on Saturday.
Said a delighted Pirates manager Clint Hurdle: “It’s one of the best pitched games I’ve seen. You take into account the pitches thrown, 21 out of 30 first-pitch strikes, and then you get the leadoff hitter six out of nine innings … defense helped him (Karstens) out a couple times, but that was a masterful outing. You talk about throwing strikes, pounding down in the zone, changing speeds, he had it all working tonight.”
Cincinnati Reds 6 – 5 St. Louis Cardinals
Cardinals missed a great opportunity to keep the leading position in the Central table last night at the Great American Ball Park where the visitors were edged by the Reds due to a poor finish. St. Louis led Cincinnati 5-4 in the eighth term, but lost the game through their fingers after conceding a couple of points in the ninth term.
Reds scored the first two points of the meeting through Heisey who fired a couple of homers in the first and fifth term respectively. Unfortunately for the hosts, things got much complicated starting with the seventh inning when both sides scored five points. St. Louis cut the deficit to one point through Pujols, while Holliday evened the situation right afterwards. Finally, Cardinals took their first lead through Berkman who made it 3-2 after Cruz’s single.
Cincinnati broke back immediately and took back the one-point lead thanks to Stubbs and Heisey who made it 4-3 in the same round. Pujols then hit a 404-foott homerun, while Rasmus threatened with a late comeback. Unfortunately for the former leaders, Phillips, who fired a 394 footer, and Cozart gave the Reds a precious win in front of a 41,000 warmly crowd.
Cincinnati sit 3 gamesback behind leaders Pirates with a .495 record which includes 46 wins and 47 defeats. The win over Cardinals is their fourth in the past ten games and 24th at home. On the other side, St. Louis share the top spot with Pittsburgh, having both gone .527 this term. Cardinals have won 49 games and lost 44, the defeat to Reds being their sixth in the past ten games and 23rd on the road.
Detroit Tigers 2 – 8 Chicago White Sox
Detroit continue their freefall as the former leaders were stunned by the White Sox on Friday at the Comerica Park where the hosts were given to chance to break through. Chicago scored their first four points in a row as Tigers could barely cut the deficits to two points in the fourth term. The first two innings went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw Chicago score the four points.
Beckham brought the first lead for the visitors after Pierre reached on bunt single to first with Teahen getting to second. The same Teahen and Peirre put their side three points ahead following Dunn’s single, while Konerko ended the early session right afterwards from Quentin’s single to right. Detroit’s first and only signs of life came one term later through Cabrera, who fired a 389 footer, and Ordonez who seemed to resuscitate his side. But his point could only trigger Chicago’s second rally which included four more points.
Pierre made it 5-2 in the fifth inning after Quentin grounded into fielder’s choice. The sixth round went scoreless for both sides, but the seventh one highlighted White Sox building a comprehensive victory. Dunn and Quentin scored the last couple of points as Detroit have gone 1 gameback behind new leaders Indians.
Chicago have improved their season record to .484, including 45 wins and 48 defeats, the victory over Tigers being their fourth in the past ten games and 24th on the road where they have finally switched positive. As for Detroit, they are second with a .527 percentage which features 49 wins and 44 defeats, the loss to Sox being their fifth in the past ten games and 20th at home.
New York Mets 2 – 7 Philadelphia Phillies
Phillies grabbed a comprehensive win on Friday at the Citi Field where the leaders dominated Mets throughout the entire meeting. Philadelphia have thus cemented their top spot with a second straight win, going .630 this season. Ibanez and Ruiz brought the first lead for Phillies in the second inning after Mayberry Jr. singled to right center.
Brown then made it even 3-0 following Worley’s grounding, while Ibanez, who fired a 373 footer in the sixth term, made it four. Mets’ first reply came through Beltran who cut the deficit to three points in the same inning, only to be left six points behind in the eighth term when Ruiz and Brown made things look clear as possible.
Finally, New York scored a last consolation point through Beltran who hit a 434-foot homer as Philadelphia were preparing to celebrate their 24th win on the road. Phillies remain top spot with 58 wins and 34 losses, the victory over Mets being their seventh in the last ten games. As for New York, they remain third with a .500 percentage, including 46 wins and 46 defeats, the loss to the leaders being their third in a row and fifth in the past ten games.
Atlanta Braves 11 – 1 Washington nationals
Braves celebrated their 10,000th franchise win on Friday at the Turner Field where the hosts crashed Nationals by ten points after being led 0-1 in the early minutes. Washington opened the score through Bernadina, but things would get very complicated later on. Atlanta powered through to a four-point trot set in the same first term.
Freeman singled to right, allowing Schafer to even the situation with Heyward getting to third. Uggla then doubled to left as Heyward brought the minimal advantage for the hosts. An error committed by Desmond cost Nationals another precious point scored by Freeman. Finally, the early session ended with McLouth singling to center and Uggla making it 4-1.
The second inning went scoreless for both sides, while the third one saw the same Braves extend their lead to four points through Ross. Prado hit the first homer of the night, his 363 footer putting Atlanta well ahead of their opponents who wouldn’t cut any deficit until the end. The sixth round brought three more points for the hosts as Hudson, Schafer and Prado made it 9-1.
Finally, Freeman doubled to left, allowing Schafer and Heyward to end the game in high style. Braves remain second in the East with a .591 percentage which includes 55 wins and 38 defeats, the win over Washington being their seventh in the past ten games and 29th at home this season. On the other side, Nationals lie second from the bottom within the same Conference with a .495 negative record, including 46 wins and 47 defeats, the loss to Atlanta being their fifth in the past ten games and 29th on the road.
