A new study prevails some good insight into what may be the reason for the development of Parkinson's disease
Ever since the terrible condition affected so many people, researchers all over the world have tried to find out how Parkinson’s disease work and what lays behind it.
A new set of research suggests that the main cause of Parkinson’s is in genetic mutations. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic made a study based on a Swiss family which had a huge history of Parkinson’s disease and what they did was to use an advanced DNA sequencing technology to determine that genetics is what lays behind this terrible condition. “This finding provides an exciting new direction for Parkinson’s disease research,” said one of the study’s co-author, Zbigniew Wszolek. “Every new gene we discover for Parkinson’s disease opens up new ways to understand this complex disease, as well as potential ways of clinically managing it.”
The team of researchers from the Mayo Clinic actually got a chance to see what was behind the Parkinson’s history in the Swiss family and they determined that a certain type of mutation in proteins responsible with the recycling of other proteins in cells, called VPS35 was behind the condition. The authors of the study wrote that this type of mutation lead to the formation of unnatural proteins which have been formerly discovered in Parkinson’s disease brains. Furthermore, the researchers also discovered that there was also a connection between these genes and Alzheimer’s disease and other degenerative diseases.
According to the researchers involved in the study, further research must be done in order to determine what these gene mutations actually do to the brain. Moreover, they also stated that this particular study may provide information and there are probably some good chances of finding new ways to prevent the disease from developing or even for slow its process.
Parkinson’s disease is a type of degenerative disorder of the central nervous system and it usually affects older adults. However, there are cases when younger adults are also affected by this condition.
