City still share the leading position with United after the Blues beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 yesterday at the Ewood Park. Roberto Mancini’s scored all the four goals within the second term with newly transferred Nasri and Savic scoring their first ones for City.
Johnson opened the score early in the second half, while Balotelli doubled the lead just three minutes later. Nasri also put his name on the scoreboard amid the term, while the former Partizan defender Savic closed the meeting with a late one which sticks City by United at the top of the Premier League.
The first dangerous action came from the visitors who put some pressure on Robinson’s goal early in the seventh minute. Silva slalomed between his marks only to be denied by the keeper whose save allowed Balotelli to win the rebound. Unfortunately, he failed to put the follow up into the net in what should have been at least a difficult test for Robinson.
Milner saved his side from a potential disaster as the midfielder blocked Yakubu at the death. Roberto Mancini made the first change early in the 25th minute when Sergio Aguero departed for Nasri Samir. Kolarov got his first chance in the 33rd minute following a remarkable action which saw him find plenty of space only to finish it wide.
City edged the opener two minutes later through Balotelli who also failed to convert it home, following a lovely action developed by Silva. Despite finishing the first half with a 70 percent of possession, City were still expecting the opener which would become just a matter of time, though.
The second half started with the same City besieging the opposite half. Silva developed a one two with Nasri, the finish of which saw Samba deny Spaniard’s dangerous shot. Balotelli had his biggest chance in the 53rd minute when the Italian striker hit the post from outside the box. The rebound was then held by Robinson.
Four minutes later Johnson broke through to score the first one for City following a corner on the left which the Rovers defense cleared as far as the striker who beat the keeper with a screamer from 25 yards. Two minutes later, Balotelli made it 2-0 following a superb action on the left the finish of which saw Nasri deliver a perfect cross for the Italian who put it home from six yards.
Rovers replied with an offensive change, introducing Mauro Formica for Goodwillie. Zabaleta picked a yellow card for diving inside the box in the 68th minute, though City were in control. The 73rd minute saw Nasri score his first one for City. Rovers lost the ball in City’s half after a mistaken corner which Mancini’s side converted into a consistent counter attack. David Silva led the action inside the box where he exchanged a couple of passes with Nasri who beat the keeper with a deflected shot into the near post.
Blackburn broke back three minutes later through newly introduced Formica whose effort was parried by Hart who was not kept too busy on the Ewood. Stefan Savic replaced Johnson in the 78th minute in what proved to be a very inspired move from Mancini. Just seven minutes after being introduced, the former Partizan Belgrade player scored the fourth one for City, the first for himself.
City won a corner on the left which Savic headed it into the top corner to close the meeting. Dzeko replaced Balotelli with three minutes left as City eventually celebrated their sixth win of the season. Mancini’s side are second in the table with the same number of points as United, 19.
Rovers lie second from the bottom with four points, the same as Fulham, sitting just one point above foot of the table Bolton.
Said City coach David Platt after the game: “I was confident we’d give a good performance today. The games are coming so thick and fast that we can’t dwell on a defeat for too long, and we didn’t… We started the second-half much better, got our full-backs forward more and Adam Johnson hugged the line more, which in turn created space for others.”
Manchester City will next host Aston Villa on October 15, while Rovers visit newly promoted Queens Park Rangers.
