Europa League when the French were defeated 2-0 by Athletic Bilbao at the San Mames stadium.
It took the Spaniards just 20 minutes to score the first one through Gabilondo, who scored the best goal of the night, and 25 more minutes to double their lead which was brought by Susaeta. It was a very tense game in Spain with both sides conceding eight yellow cards and a red respectively. Athletic started to put the pressure on Douchez’s goal early in the third minute when Llorent missed the target from good position in what could have been a tremendous start for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
The first yellow card was shown in the ninth minute to Aurtetxe for a tough challenge which hindered the French side of developing a dangerous action around the box. Susaeta got his first opportunity five minutes later, but his finish went standswards to the dismay of coach Bielsa. The 20th minute saw the hosts open the score though, through Gabilondo who converted a perfect cross from the left delivered by Oscar de Marcos.
Gabilondo beat the keeper with an outstanding over the head shot into the top corner. PSG broke back immediately through Nene whose effort on goal was parried by keeper Iraizoz. Mevlut Erdinc also tried his luck with a shot from distance to which the same Iraizoz was equal. The next minutes were dominated by the visitors but neither of their strikers could convert it home. Muniain missed the target in the 33rd minute as Athletic were chasing for more goals at the Mames.
Nine minutes later Muniain could have had his name on the scoreboard but the midfielder missed the target for the second time. On the other side PSG were desperately chasing their leveler with Bodmer and Sissoko looking for a late one. Sissoko was booked with one minute left in the first time, something which earned the hosts a dangerous free kick which they finished poorly.
But Bilbao did come up with a second one seconds before the half time. Susaeta made it 2-0 following a great action on the left the finish of which saw Jon Aurtenetxe deliver a long cross inside the box from where Susaeta put it past the keeper from seven yards or so. The half time went 2-0 as Bielsa’s side were in control.
The early minutes of the second part saw PSG besiege Iraizoz’s goal but with no result on the scoreboard. Tiene missed the target from the edge of the box, while Mevlut Erdinc had his shot on goal parried again by a vigilant keeper. Sissoko then conceded a second yellow card to leave the pitch in the 52nd minute for a foul on Muniain.
Five minutes later Muniain saw his first yellow for a trip on Chantome. PSG made their first change in the 59th minute, replacing Pastore with Bahebeck. The newly introduced got his first chance just six minutes later but the finish was denied by Iraizoz. Coach Antoine Kombouare then introduced Matuidi for Bodmer but the French’s game would not change too much.
But on the contrary, they were very close to conceding a third one in the 70th minute when both Llorente and Muniain finished their actions poorly. The hosts made their first substitution in the 73rd minute as scorer Susaeta made way for Iturraspe. Tiene got a second big chance one minute later but the midfielder hit it standswards.
PSG, who spent millions on transfers this summer and who are also aiming David Beckham’s move in Paris, made their last change in the 76th minute when Ceara replaced ineffectual Nene. The last minutes of the game saw the French get very frustrated and concede a couple of more yellow cards through Tiene and Ceara. With eight minutes lkeft in the second part Biesla also introduced Toquero for Muniain.
Just one minute after being introduced Toquero saw his great effort parried by the keeper as Athletic were still looking for a third late goal. De Marcos then tried his luck with a range shot which missed the target, while Erdinc closed the meeting with a dangerous shot which the Spanish defence blocked at the death.
Bilbao won the game to go top of the group F with six points earned in two games. PSG are their main followers with three points but are in big competition with Red Bull Salzburg who have also earned three points thanks to a 3-0 win against foot of the table Slovan Bratislava.
Said a disappointed PSG coach Antoine Kombouare: “It’s just a defeat. We defended well tonight and we attacked but Athletic Club managed to score before and after those moments while we missed our chances. If someone manages to score against you early on in a game it is not crucial; what matters is the result. We will respond to this loss.”
Athletic Bilbao will next host Red Bull Salzburg on San Mames on October 20, while PSG travel to Slovan Bratislava the same day.
