Radwanska wins sixth career title in Tokyo

World number 13 Agnieszka Radwanska has won her sixth career title when the Polish stunned third favorite Vera Zvonareva in two sets, 6-3, 6-2 in the Tokyo final.

The Polish, who had previously ousted another main favorite – Victoria Azarenka, needed just one hour and 15 minutes to close the meeting. Zvonareva, who was chasing her third title of the year after the Doha and Baku Cup successes, dropped the first set after conceding a couple of services amid the term.

The Russian also broke her opponent but failed to convert the other two break points, losing the first set in just over half an hour. As for the second set, it saw the same Radwanska power through to a much more consistent lead. The Polish converted three out of four break points to go four games atop of the losing pace Vera who could only convert a break point.

Reflected Radwanska after hoisting the title: “It was a perfect match for me. If you don’t play high percentage and your best against Vera you have no chance. I didn’t expect to beat a great player like her 6-3 6-2. I was nervous at the start but I’m happy I woke up very quickly… I was very focused from start to finish.”

The Polish finished the game with a 66 first serve percentage, a double fault and a 57 return percentage. Agnieszka also won 58 percent of service points, converted five out of seven break points and won 58 points out of 100 played. On the other side, Zvonareva, who was out of shape, came up with a poor 47 first serve percentage, five double faults and just two out of four break points conversions.

The Russian also won 42 percent of receiving points and 43 of service ones. The head to head series between the two is now led by the 22 year old who has defeated world number four three times in five meetings. Vera’s last win comes from this term’s Miami Masters.

En route to the final, Radwanska had ousted Victoria Azarenka in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the semi finals, Caroline Wozniacki’s killer Kaia Kanepi 6-2, 7-6 in the quarter finals, Jelena Jankovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the third round, Angelique Kerber 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second term and Misaki Doi 6-1, 6-1 in the opening day.

As for Zvonareva, her route to the last term included a 7-6, 6-0 win against Petra Kvitova whom she defeated in the final four term, Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-3 in the quarter finals and Iveta Benesova 6-1, 6-2 in the previous round. The Russian started her Tokyo event with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Tsvetana Pironkova.

Radwanska is to bank $360,000 and earn 900 points WTA, while the Russian will pocket $180,000 and grab 620 points WTA. Both players have already lined up to the upcoming Beijing event.
