Schalke 04 have climbed first in the Group J of Europa League after the Germans beat Maccabi Haifa 3-1 thanks to Fruchs’s double and Jurado’s late goal on Veltins Arena.
De Jesus opened the game with a dangerous finish which the Germans survived at the death in the eighth minute. But Schalke broke back categorically one minute later when Fuchs scored the first goal following a lovely action on the left which involved all Draxler, Huntelaar and the striker. The Dutch fed Fuchs with a great long pass inside the box which he converted home into the left hand far post.
Haifa also tried to break back in the 12th minute but Boccoli’s effort was denied by Fahrmann. De Jesus got his second chance in the 21st minute but the forwarder missed the target from the edge of the box. Matip was very close to scoring the second one for the hosts, but his finish went off target. The Israeli earned a free kick in the 26th minute which Yahaya delivered over the wall but straight at the keeper.
Former Real Madrid start Raul got his first chance in the 28th minute when the Spaniard missed the target from distance. Vered mocked a golden chance in the 35th minute when the Haifa left midfielder was denied by Fahrmann at the death. Just one minute later, he would bring the leveler though. Vered had his one two blocked by one of Schalke’s defenders.
The ball was then earned back by Vered who saw his first edge of the box volley saved by Fahrmann whose poor save allowed the same midfielder to convert the rebound home from tight angle and through the keeper’s legs. Schalke struggled for a quick break through but Draxler missed the target one minute alter.
The half time went even but the game was still opened to any result. The second half started with Raul’s attempt on goal but the Spaniard’s finish left the scoreboard unchanged. Haifa made their first change in the 55th minute, introducing Cohen for Amasha. Two minutes later, the newly introduced received a yellow card for a trip on Matip.
Farfan, too, was shown a yellow card in the 59th minute for sins inside the Germans’ half. Coach Huub Stevens then replaced Holtby with Jurado in what would prove to be a very inspired move for the home side. Matip also made way for Papadopoulos in the same 62nd minute. Four minutes later Huntelaar scored following a chaos among the Haifa defenders. The referee disallowed the goal for an offside position.
But just three minutes later, Fuches completed his double with a screamer from 25 yards or so. Schalke won a free kick well outside the box which the striker hit over the wall and down the bottom corner.
Haifa answered with a couple of changes as coach Elisha Levy replaced both De Jesus and Boccoli with Dvalishvili and Ghadir respectively. Frustration was also being felt among the visitors as Twatha picked his first yellow card in the 73rd minute for a tough challenge on Farfan. Schalke made yet another substitution in the 77th minute when Draxler made way for Jones.
Schalke missed two big chances in the next minutes through Jones who missed the target inches and Farfan who had his shot on goal parried by the keeper. Huntellar also missed the target two minutes later. On the other side, Dvalishvili was cautioned by the referee 20 minutes after being introduced.
Jurado closed the game with a third one for the Germans in the 82nd minute after a personal exquisite which saw the newly introduced slalom between two marks and beat the keeper into the far post. Haifa struggled to cut the deficit in the last minutes but Cohen’s goalwards effort was denied by Fahrmann. Osman was the last to pick a yellow card in the last minute.
Said Fuchs after the game: “It’s the first time in my career that I’ve scored twice in a game, and my free-kick was the one that won us the game. They were also my first goals in the Europa League. However, it was more important that we took all three points and had a good start. We’re top of the group now and we naturally want to stay there as long as possible.”
Schalke lead the group J with four points but have Maccabi just one point behind them. Steaua Bucharest, who were drawn 1-1 by AEK Larnaca, are third with two points, while the Cypriots are foot of the table with one point.
Schalke 04 will next meet AEK Larnaca on October 20 at the GSP stadium, while Maccabi host Steaua Bucharest on Kiryat Eli’ezer the same day.
