Messi wins European BPY for the first time
The 24 year old had been the main candidate for the award, given his recent performances with the Catalans. Messi won three important trophies this season, including the UEFA Champions League one, the Spanish title and the Spanish Super Cup. The Argentine has won his first BPE Award, his second big individual honor after the Ballon d’Or which he won earlier this year.
“I’d like to thank all the people that voted for me, and all my team-mates. I keep all these awards at home and I still have some space for more. It’s an honour to be so successful and to come up with the goods at the right time; thanks to my team-mates for helping me achieve this,” said Messi after hoisting the award.
His team mate Xabi received the second most points, 11, while Real Madrid start Cristiano Ronaldo was given just three votes from the journalists. Ronaldo won just one trophy this year, the Copa del Rey, Real’s first one under Jose Mourinho.
FC Barcelona gathered four players in the shortlist, including Andres Iniesta and defender Gerard Pique. FC Porto’s Falcao, who has become the best top scorer in an European Competition, was the fifth favorite for the award, while Wayne Rooney, who scored Manchester United’s only goal in the UCL final against Barca, was sixth. His team mate Nemanja Vidic, who now captains the Red Devils with which he won last term’s Premier League title, was seventh.
Former Barcelona striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was rated as eighth favorite for the award, being followed by Pique and former FC Schalke 04 keeper Manuel Neuer who helped the Germans reach their first UCL semi final last season.
The previous award had been won by Inter striker Diego Milito who led the Italians through the UCL success two years ago. The Best Player in Europe award was created by the UEFA boss Michael Platini, being given to the player who has the best performances in both domestic and international competitions.
Messi has won seven honors this season, including the Ballon d’Or, La Liga player of the Year as well as the Ibero-American Player of the Year. The award was given the same day the next term’s Champions League draws took place. FC Barcelona were drawn AC Milan, BATE Borisov and Czechs side Viktoria Plzen. The Catalans will try to in successive trophies for the first time since early 90s. AC Milan were the last side to win straight UCL trophies. Barca have also won three UCL trophies since 2005-6 season.
