FC Sevilla were ousted from the Europa League play-offs by Hannover who pass the Spaniards thanks to a 1-1 second leg draw at the Ramon Sanchez stadium. The Germans have made the progress through the EL group stage thanks to a 3-2 aggregate.
The two sides conceded 11 yellow cards and a red one together as Abdellaoue’s first half goal proved to be crucial for his side’s progress. The visitors opened the score in the 23rd minute, but were leveled 15 minutes later. Pogatetz scored an own goal to put the Spaniards just one goal from their qualification. Fortunately, the Germans managed to keep the sheet clean since then, something which helped them to oust one of the play-off favorites.
Said Germans’ coach Mirko Slomka after the meeting: “It is nice we have had such a good start. I am sure no one underestimates us, though. We have to work very hard for our success. Nothing comes easy for us. But we are being taken very seriously in the Bundesliga… I am not surprised, just very happy. We have great faith in our team.”
Hannover have been drawn FC Copenhagen, Standard Liege and Ukrainian side Vorskla in group B of the next season, being expected to start the group stage as third favorites.
The same night AS Roma were eliminated from the competition despite drawing Bratislava at the Olimpico. Perrotta opened the score for the hosts early in the meeting, but the Slovaks leveled the result late in the 83rd minute, Stepanovsky’s goal being sufficient for their progress through. Slovan beat Roma 1-0 in the first leg, to make Luis Enrique start the new season poorly.
Slovan will meet Salzburg, Athletic Bilbao and PSG in the group F of the next term’s Europa League and will start the sage as last favorite.
One of the biggest revelations are Irish side Shamrock Rovers who have become the first Irish club to reach the Europa League group stage. Shamrock grabbed the qualification after pushing the tough meeting against Partizan Belgrade into extra time. Volkov opened the score for the hosts in the first half, while Sullivan evened the situation in the 58th, to make it 1-1 in aggregate.
But just a couple of minutes before the penalties, O’Donnell made history of the Rovers, scoring a late winner for a huge progress. Nine yellow cards a red one were shown last night in Serbia. Shamrock will meet Tottenham Hotspur, Rubin Kazan and Greek side PAOK in the first group of the next term.
