Thirteen Turkish Soldiers Killed in Southeastern Turkey
Diyabakir Province
Thirteen Turkish soldiers were killed on Thursday in an ambush during a military operation in the town of Silvan, in the province of Diyarbakir, in the southeastern part of the country.
Their funeral was planned by authorities on Friday, and the NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed his deepest condolences to the families of those killed in what he deemed in a statement as “terrorist heinous attack” with “no justification.”
Rasmussen added that NATO stood in full solidarity with Turkey, which is a member of the transcontinental military bloc, in the fight against terrorism.
The government blames the attacks on PKK, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, a separatist movement Turkey, United States and other states regard as terrorist. The military says that the troops were ambushed by PKK insurgents, and a fight broke out.
The thirteen are reported to have died as a result of a fire started by hand grenades thrown in a forest. Seven Kurds were also killed, and seven more Turkish soldiers were hurt by the fire, two very seriously.
