Manchester United have made their second big transfer of the season signing former Aston Villa and England winger Ashley Young. The 25-year-old has penned a five-year deal with the Premier League champions whom he is to join immediately.
Young split with the Birmingham side after four years, though he had had one more season left with his former side. The winger finished the term with seven goals, the same as midfielder Stewart Downing, being the second best top-scorer at Villa Park after Darren Bent who scored nine goals this term. Young is though the best assister at Aston with ten decisive passes for his team-mates, being followed by Downing who had seven.
Neither of the two sides have officially reported the fee, though reports say the move is worth in the region of 15 million pounds. Saind Aston Villa’s new coach Alex McLeish: “Ashley has made a terrific contribution for Villa in the last four-and-a-half seasons and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future.” On the other side, Young has declared he’s very delighted to join one of the best teams in the world. “The opportunity to come and play for one of the biggest clubs in the world is one I couldn’t turn down. It’s a chance to hopefully become part of their history by helping to win the 20th title.”
Young has previously, played for Watford between 2002 and 2007 for whom he scored 20 goals in 101 appearances and with whom he won the Championship playoffs in 2006. His adventure on Villa Park brought the winger 38 goals and 190 selections, including the 2009 Peace Cup plus a League Cup final played last term.
Ashley is also winner of the 2009 PFA Young Player of the Year as well as of the Premier League Player of the Month. His international career includes two goals with the national team of England with whom he has gathered 15 selections. His first goal dates from February 2011 when the winger scored the only goal in England’s 1-2 loss against Denmark in a friendly, while the second one comes from June 4 when Fabio Capello’s side were drawn by Switzerland on Wembley in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying round.
Young becomes the second big name to join Manchester United after Phil Jones arrived on Old Trafford earlier this month. The 19-year-old former Blackburn Rovers defender split with his first side after two years and is expected to set new heights with the Red Devils who are this term’s UEFA Champions League finalists.
Jones’s experience includes 35 appearances with Rovers, but no goals, plus seven matches with the Under-21 England team. His move on Old Trafford was estimated to be in the region of 16,5 million pounds, though neither of the two sides revealed the price.
