Driving with your arm on the window of the car during a sunny day can be very dangerous
Skin cancer or melanoma is one of the most common types of cancers, given that each and every one of us gets some sun exposure and for some, it can be fatal.
According to a new research on the subject, it seems that people who drive with their window open and their hand on the window are at high risk of developing skin cancer, especially because they are exposed so much to the sun. Summer is here and the sun is burning more than ever, especially because of the solar explosions and such. Given that humans are so fragile and predisposed to all sorts of diseases, doctors and scientists recommend that we should take better care of our selves during this period of the year. Getting a cool breeze in the car while driving may be very dangerous, especially for people who are very sensitive to sun exposure and get burned with ease. The researchers involved in this new study have looked at the records of more than 85,000 people with skin cancer and their conclusion was that many of these people had issues on the left side of their bodies, especially on their arms and faces. “This was greatest on the arm, and that pattern is exactly what you would expect from driving a car and the UV exposure you would get from that,” said study author Dr. Paul Nghiem of the University of Washington. According to Nghiem, sunlight accounts for more than 10 skin cancer on the arms and that is the main reason for which people should drive their cars with their windows closed and dressed with long sleeves.
Dr. Nghiem is not the only one who recommends this to people, as Dr. Lisa Kellett, a dermatologist in Toronto, also agrees with him saying that although the windows of the car may be closed, some of the most dangerous UVA radiations can still penetrate the windows. In order to prevent from getting skin cancer, Kellett recommends people to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen, every day. Furthermore, the same goes whether you are in the car or not. In what concerns women, given that the numbers of women who are drivers have gone up in the recent years, there has been seen no difference between men and women when it came to skin cancer, in this particular situation. The bottom line is that during this period of the year, when the sun burns so much, people should get double, if not triple, protection in order to prevent themselves from developing skin cancer also known as melanoma. Staying hydrated and putting very effective sunscreen every day do wonders when it comes to this situation.
