Schiavone reaches third round
Seventh favorite Francesca Schiavone has made a much easier progress than in the first round, eliminating Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in two sets, 7-5, 6-3. The Italian will next meet revelation Tamira Paszek of Austria.
Schiavone first broke her opponent in the first game of the meeting, something which allowed her to make it 2-0 right afterwards. Strycova threatened with a late comeback though, managing to break back in the eighth game and level the situation at four. Fortunately, the Italian still had the advantage of her service and thus the consistency to go 6-5 ahead of the Czech who eventually conceded her last serve and allowed the favorite to make it 1-0.
Concerning the second set, it found the two players exchanging three back-to-back breaks, starting with Barbora who stunned the Italian with a 2-1 minimal lead. But the titleless Schaiovone broke back immediately to even the score and go 3-2 right afterwards. Even more than that, the Italian grabbed another straight break in the sixth game to go 5-2 ahead and serve for the match.
Schiavone would eventually hold her last service to close out the game in nearly one hour and a half to make the progress and face Tamira Paszek who eased past Christina McHale in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The same day Serena Williams struggled against Romania’s Simona Halep whom the former champions and world number one overcame after surviving an early scare, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
“Usually players that height don’t serve as well – she has so much power on her serve, that’s actually really awesome. I feel like I started slowly today, but I was actually really, really trying to start out fast. That obviously didn’t happen. I got a little tight out there and I just need to relax,” said Serena after the game. Next up for her is Maria Kirilenko who ousted Tamarine Tanasugarn 7-5, 7-5 to meet the American for the first time.
Another former world leader Ana Ivanovic has made an easy progress after eliminating Eleni Daniilidou 6-3, 6-0 in the second term, to face Petra Cetkovska who has provided one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. The Czech ousted Agnieszka Radwanksa in three sets, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 to become a real threat for the Serb.
This term’s Stuttgart champion Julia Gorges upset Mathilde Johansson of France 7-6, 6-2 to set a tough meeting with Dominika Cibulkova who eased past Polona Hercog 6-1, 6-2. Sabine Lisicki, winner at this month’s Birmingham event, is to fight Misaki Doi for a place into the fourth term. The German has provided by far the biggest surprise of the English slam when she sent French Open champion Li Na home in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 8-6.
Li Na managed to take the opener after breaking her opponent in the eighth game, but things would become much complicated for the Chinese. Thus, the early minutes of the second set saw her concede the second service and allow Lisicki to go 4-1 ahead of her. With a last effort, Li Na managed to cut the deficit to one game, only to concede the set later on.
As for the decider, it found the two opponents exchanging four breaks. Li Na was the first to take a 3-2 advantage, only to be stunned by a late comeback which saw Lisicki level her 5-5. The Chinese then broke back, while the German also broke her to push the third round into the breaker. Sabine then held her serves to make it 7-6 as Li Na was condemned to hold, too, in order to stay in the match. Unfortunately, the French Open winner conceded the service easily, allowing the 21-year-old to make a huge progress and thus near her best performance at Wimbledon.
Andrea Petkovic and Ksenia Pervak will also fight for a fourth term spot. The German, winner of this season’s Strasbourg event, edged Stephanie Dubois 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while her next opponent overcame Pauline Parmentier 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. On the same first half of the table, Nadio Petrova will meet Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukrine. The Russian has grabbed her second straight-set victory of the week when she defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 6-3.
Bondarenko, who had previously eased past Alzie Cornet, had some hard times against Sara Errani whom the Ukrainian stunned 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Yanina Wickmayer edged Anna Tatishvili 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to play Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third term. The Russian eased past Romania’s lexandra Dulgheru 6-0, 6-2. Second favorite Vera Zvinareva has made an easy progress after beating Elena Vesnina 6-1, 7-6 to face Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria. Pironkova eased past Petra Martic 6-1, 6-4, but will have a tough life against the Russian.
Roberta Vinci and Petra Kvitova are set to provide one of the toughest third terms. Winner at the Brisbane, Paris and Madrid Kvitova crashed Anne Keothavong of England 6-2, 6-1, while her next opponent defeated Rebecca Marino 7-6, 6-2 to set the first meeting with the Czech. Top seed Caroline Wozniacki, who is still chasing her first Grand Slam trophy of career, has flown into the second term after thwarting Arantxa Parra 6-2, 6-1. The world champion Dane is to meet Virginie Razzano of France who edged Sania Mirza 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the opening day.
Andre Hlavackova and Jarmila Gajdosova will also face each other for a third term spot. The Czech eliminated Anastasia Rodionova 6-1, 6-2, while her next opponent ousted Alona Bondarenko 7-5, 6-3. Former world champion Maria Sharapova, who reached superior phases at the French Open, has made an easy debut, beating Anna Chakvetadze 6-2, 6-1 in the first term. Next up for her is Laura Robson who overcame Angelizue Kerber in the first term.
