German title after his opponent Philipp Petzschner retired at 7-6, 2-0 down due to a lower back injury. World number 49 Kohlschreiber has thus grabbed his third career success.
The 71st-ranked Petzschner had managed to push the first set into breaker he conceded at the death later on, but, unfortunately, things got much worse after he lost his first service in the second set. The German accused the pain early in term to ask for medical treatment. The second favorite then announced his retirement, gifting his compatriot a free trophy, Kohlscreiber’s first of the season, third of career.
Said the champion: “It ended so quickly. So I wasn’t really feeling like a winner, but it was the best time for a victory. As you could see before, I really worked hard here, I tried to play good tennis here. It hasn’t worked that well this year until now. I never had a real success, so the win came in the right moment for me.”
On the other side, Petzschner said he wouldn’t have been sad had he lost the tight game as long as he has proved to be a real threat even for higher ranked players, including the top ten. The 27-year–old, who has won just one title in career, had beaten seventh-ranked Tomas Berdych who had started the Halle event as a main favorite. In the quarter finals, Petzschner had ousted Milos Raonic in three sets, while the first two round had brought him two straight-set wins over Dominik Meffert and Daniel Gimeno respectively.
As for Kohlschreiber, he had followed a straight-set victory against French favorite Gael Monfils, but also a 7-6, 6-3 against former world number one Lleyton Hewitt. The first two round showed the German edging Cedrik Marcel Stebe and easing past Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second term.
The head to head series between the two compatriots have now gone 3-1 to the Kohlschreiber who had previously defeated Petzschner at the 2010 Monte Carlo Masters. Sunday’s final was also their second meeting of the year. Petzschner beat the 27-year-old at the Dubai event, which is also his only victory over his countryman.
Kohlschreiber is to pocket a 114,750 euro-check, while Petzschner will receive 60,400 euros after this week’s performances.

Sebastian Vettel has set his sixth pole of the season after coming fastest in the Montreal qualifying. The 23-year-old set a 1 minute and 13,014 seconds time, being followed by the former world champion Fernando Alonso who was 0,185 slower than the current leader.
Vettel seems to have put the Friday practice crash behind, counter-balancing his poor start with a 21st pole of career. Meanwhile, Alonso has also improved his time to become the second favorite for the Montreal Grand Prix. Spaniard’s team-mate Felipe Massa has also set a good time, taking into account the Brazilian hadn’t gone too well in the previous practices. He was 0,203 seconds slower than the German. Red Bull will have Mark Webber on fourth position, the Aussie having set a 0,415 second-gap after 22 laps.
This year’s Chinese Grnad Prix winner Lewis Hamilton will start the Sunday race on fifth after he finished the qualifying with a one minute and 13,565 second-time. Nico Rosberg, who had won the first practice, came sixth in Saturday’s round, going 0,800 seconds behind Vettel. Jenson Button made 20 laps and set a one minute and 13,838 as best time. The Briton is followed by another former world champion Michael Schumacher who came eighth with a 0,850 second-gap.
Finally, the ninth and tenth place have been taken by Renault. Nick Heidfeld was 1,048 seconds slower than the German, while Vitaly Petrov came just 0,021 seconds behind his team-mate. Pedro de la Rose, who is replacing Sergio Perez at Sauber came 17th, setting a 2,573 second-gap. Rubens Barrichello came 16th with a 2,347 second-gap, while his Williams team-mate Maldonado came 12th, just over two seconds behind the leader.
Vettel will be chasing his sixth title of the season after he has already won five in Melbourne, Malaysia, Istanbul, Barcelona and Monte Carlo. Hamilton has declared the German is far too away from being caught, claiming that “Vettel is gone, he is on his way. Red Bull are very, very hard for us to catch at this rate… We are just very slow this weekend. It appears the other guys have maybe made a step forward. I pushed as hard as I could. I guess back to the drawing board.”
Vettel leads the rankings with 211 points, having gone 89 points ahead of the second-placed Briton. Mark Webber is third with 116 points, being followed by Jenson Button, who has earned 116 points, and Fernando Alonso who is fifth with 95 points.
