Top seed Caroline Wozniacki eased past Lucie Safarova at the $220,000 Danish event to hoist her fifth trophy of the season. The 20-year-old Dane thwarted the Czech 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour to grab her second straight title in Copenhagen.
Wozniacki needed just 23 minutes to clinch the opener, while the second term showed the same crowd favorite rallying pas the world number 38 in 45 minutes. The world champion finished the tournament without conceding any of her sets, and has improved her Danish performance to 10-0. On the other side, the fourth favorite Safarova could barely hold a solitary service in the opener, allowing her opponent to gab another precious one in the second, something which helped the Dane to finish the week with the sheet clean.
Wozniacki, who has won her 17th career title, was at her second appearance in Copenhagen, her home performances having gone perfectly so far. “This is my 17th title and last time I played here I had eight titles, so I’ve more than doubled that. The last three matches my game has been at a very high level and I’m looking forward to going to London, and practicing and preparing for Wimbledon,” said the world leader who still lacks a Grand Slam success.
As for Safarova, the 24-year-old has missed a great chance to win her fifth career title, first of the season. En route to the final, Safarova had edged revelation Petra Martic 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the semis and had also claimed a crucial win over Chinese SHaui Zhang in the quarters. The first two rounds brought the Czech a couple of more three-set victories, grabbed against Johanna Konta and Michaella Krajicek of Holland respectively.
Concerning Danish’s performance, Wozniacki beat Mona Barthel 6-1, 6-2 in the semi finals, which was her second biggest win of the week. Previous to the semis, Caroline had eased past Italian Alberta Brianti whom she had defeated 6-0, 6-1. As for the first terms, the crowd favorite had started the week with a 6-2, 6-3 comprehensive win over Irina Flaconi and a 7-6, 6-3 one against Angelique Kerber.
At the same time, the Odense born Wozniacki has got her first revenge over the Czech who beat her at the Stuttgart event last year. So, the head to head series between the two has gone 1-1, this being their first last term meeting. Caroline has won four other titles this season, including the Dubai, Indian Wells Masters, Charleston and Brussels tournaments.
